I'm not sure this is the club issue programme . I'ts the "free football programme" that makes me think, not the official programme, Any thoughts?

Of course this 1888 Sunderland programme was a free programme, therefore offical teamsheets may exsist, but i pretty much doubt it. But i think the Newcastle programme was a "pirate" of it's day , so still an nice item, but not the real deal.

This is a copy from the 1890s. As you can see, it has "Official Programme" on the cover. So i think the ebay programme is not official, so not worth as much as an official programme would be....

Unless you've got something of the same year or thereabouts to compare which says official programme, then why wouldn't it be right? You have others which say free programme of that era, so maybe this was common practice? At a guess I would think the charges to local advertisers enabled an enterprising printer to run off these and hand them out to the spectators at no cost. Supposition on my part.

i think your guess is spot on. I got similar items from the late 40s/ early 50s. Of course official club programmes from this era are pretty obvious, so no chance of mistaking them , unlike the 1880s to 1910s.

Almost certainly. Would any still exist today ? Almost certainly not, that's why this " pirate" is very desirable. Interesting to see what his reserve price is.
On 5 December 1908, Sunderland beat Newcastle 9–1 at St James' Park, a famous victory. If he had a programme for this game, unofficial or not, we would be talking £1000 plus.
