I had the pleasure of speaking to Paul Matz on the telephone for a good half an hour this week and promised him id put down my thoughts on the new magazine once id had a chance to properly look through it and here are my observations for anyone who cares.
Quote: |
The Magazine
My first thought when picking up the magazine was that the paper has changed. I like the new paper more - it feels smoother to touch.
The move of "Editors Diary" to the front article seems to make sense as I always found it strange how PM jumped straight in with an article. Also i believe "Editors Diary" is one of the most interesting articles so it’s good to see this being given more prominence.
The new font size is much easier on the eye as well and there seems to be a proper use of paragraphs and bold titles to make it easier to read in general. Compare and contrast the "Editors Diary" from the new PM and the previous edition and there is a huge improvement.
The pictures which are scattered around the magazine seem to be much better quality as well as previous editions of PM have struggled to get the pictures clear and crisp.
Also the layout of the text around the images seems to work better in the new version. Compare page 13 from the latest version of PM (364) and the previous version (363). The way in which the pictures fit inside the columns which leaves all the text alignment fully justified i believe makes reading much easier rather than the start of the lines jumping back and forth which can result in losing your place. This seems to be carried out through the new layout which I think is much better.
The use of darker backgrounds on certain articles, page 22 "Auction Radar" for example, seems to be a new introduction also which makes it easier to differentiate between various articles which in older versions of PM seemed to just all blend together.
I also like the introduction of more consistent title layouts on each page as previously they were all different fonts/sizes/styles etc and the boxes with quotes from the articles in are good at drawing your attention to the article. Although i often purchase PM i only read 3 or 4 of the articles which interest me but if I’m able to just skim through the magazine looking at these block quotes im more likely to go onto read the full article if they grab my attention.
Market Place
Firstly it’s nice to see the Market place relieved of the pages of general stock which i believe many people had come to be annoyed by. The slightly larger font face in use also makes the whole supplement much easier to read and it’s good to see the introduction of a number of pictures to break up the insert which is obviously otherwise very "wordy".
One thing that has always annoyed me in the "Wants" section though is there seems to be no order to the list. Why can’t the programmes be listed in alphabetical order by team name?
Overall
I think the layout has improved a lot. There is still much room for improvement but it’s a big jump forward from the previous PM versions which was a bit mashed together. The content at the moment is obviously rather similar but im sure with new fresh ideas this will change in the coming months too. All in all I’m quite impressed with what was achieved with the first “new” edition and look forward to the coming editions.

Craig - you have some valid points - I have been subscribing from Issue 32 and musy admit that the magazine has got stale over the last couple of years or so.
Its very difficult to keep a magazine 'fresh' over so many years and you do depend on your regular contributors so much. I find it incredible to have on this forum many, many members who have contributed so much over the years - I wont embarass them by naming them - but I know you are all here!
The best of luck to the 2 new guys taking over - at last we can now read the thing without squinting over what we're reading. The layout and printing in this first issue was exceptional, but at the end of the day its up to subscribers to give input and contribute fully in order for the magazine to be successful in the future.
regards, Mark |

The quality of the print and clarify of the photos certainly helps to freshen up the magazine, although I think in some pages the font size is actually too big.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months, and I guess a lot will depend on the feedback received through the survey they're currently conducting.
Hopefully we finally see a bit of colour, and consideration goven to a larger page size. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |

Does anyone use PM online?
I don't subscribe but do like to have a look at the offers and wants online each month.
Is it part of the deal that the ex editor has had the option to take over the entire"for sale" section this month?
No offers bit or wants at all, just all of Mr Lister's stock for sale, unless I'm missing something.

As far as I can work out pmfc.co.uk is going to remain under the control of John Lister. From this he will sell his various publications, list his stock and also continue with the "blacklist" and some other features. I think in this months PM Adverts supplement there is a list of 8 things this site will be used for.
Paul and Kevin have set up a new site at www.programmemonthly.com, if you go to the "Advertisements" section of that you will see the updated items which are in this months PM. |

Was looking on the new website and advertisements and one thing that struck me was that there were so few adverts (as before so not new issue) as presumably there is an additional internet advertising charge and not everyone paid. However isn't it about time this was all bought into the 21st century and all adverts listed on the website. Not sure how much is the extra charge but from my knowledge of website building isn't it as straightforward (and no more costly) to transfer ten pages as one page.
The other annoying thing is why don't most advertisers have email addresses. I am sure they lose a lot of potential bidders by not making themselves easy to contact. It is this archaic snail mail offers approach that is leaving the hobby floundering. Newer collectors are not interested in that kind of messing about. This is the generation of ebayers and facebookers etc.
Notwithstanding the above, good luck to Kevin and Paul and maybe a not too long step forward is for the magazine contents to also be available on the website. They could introduce an internet subscription/membership approach just like some newspapers and gain a few more readers perhaps. |

Would it be fair to say that generally, people who continue to advertise solely in PM have not fully embraced the world wide web? _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |
