I've been sent this image by someone trying to ID this old Liverpool player - looks pre-war so before my time!

If anyone can help I'd be delighted and also surprised!

Thanks in anticipation.

From the style of the attire and the distinctive facial hair I would say that there are many contenders from the 1890's.

My guess would be Sam Raybould who scored over 120 goals for the Reds and was part of the Championship winning teams of 1901 and 1906.

Other contenders would be John Walker or Malcolm McVean.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Smile

Thanks Jim, you're quite right about the era, I meant to write Pre WW1 and not just pre-war.

I've given the 3 names to my contact, and also googled them to see who you're talking about, I'd say Raybould or McVean are closer than Walker. Let's see what he reckons.

Cheers! Thumbs Up

It's not a Liverpool player. It's Joe Powell who played for Arsenal between 1892 and his untimely death in 1896.

Very interesting and a very sad story. On reflection I should have spotted the dark "shorts" which were never worn by the team in first team home games with the red shirt. I suppose I also assumed that the LFC Museum banner pointed to it being a Liverpool player!

It never ceases to amaze me, the amazing wealth of knowledge on this site. In other areas of expertise there would probably some sort of charge for this. Shocked

If I give my paypal account I'll be happy to accept a tenner Wink

The football world was incredibly supportive with collections made at games up and down the country. The money raised was used to buy his widow a tobacconist shop in Plumstead to provide an income for her and their children. Apparently it was still in the family hands after WW2.

Wouldn't it be great if the portrait found it's way back to the family....

Now it's not Liverpool but is Arsenal, my contact is open to offers on this framed photo. If anyone is interested, please drop me a note and I'll put you in touch.

Thanks to all on this and as someone said, what a great site this is for research and knowledge - and thank God that sniping and cynicism has gone.

What a fantastic spot by Goonerak.

The knowledge on this site never fails to astound me.
I honestly expected this particular "puzzler" to run for quite some time.

Well played mate!

He died of a broken arm. Shocking. Those were the days, eh?
