The attached photo is dated 3rd April 1954 and shows 1st Division action between Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United at the Valley.

According to the narrative on the back, Charlton's new centre forward, Pat Terry (one of only 4 games there, but a warrior of a player for 7 clubs thereafter) takes on Graham Shaw & Colin Rawson.

Here's my question. Are we sure that's Sheffield United? The shorts & socks look OK and they would be in change kit at the Valley, but what is this kit? Yellow & blue? And that badge, which is nothing like any Blades' badges and looks more like a Norwich canary effort.

So I ask, can anyone here confirm this is indeed Sheffield United? And what's this shirt about? Many thanks.

Hi Pete, definitely looks like Rawson covering and Shaw tackling.

Date would be right.

Cannot comment on the badge too small to see and my eyesight is nowhere as good as it was, and although I don't recognise the style of kit we did have a blazer badge that year that was similar.

Of course, could be totally wrong but I wasn't around then.

Laughing

Thanks for that, I'll email the photo to you so you can see it more clearly. But I'll work on it all being correct as described, and a rare picture of the Blades' away kit complete with blazer badge.

It was my lot who signed Pat Terry from Charlton, scored a fair few goals for us too before we flogged him a couple of years later to Swansea.

After retiring from football he became a London black cab driver.

Great pic btw, Pete.

I met up with Peter Burridge, an old hero of mine in his Palace days (1962-66) - before then he played for Millwall with Pat Terry who got 40-odd goals there. Pete said Pat was the hardest player he ever played with or against. Great to play with and a bu##er to play against! His clubs & games (& goals) read as follows:-

Charlton 4 (1)
Newport 55 (30)
Swansea 17 (9)
Gillingham 109 (62)
Northampton 24 (10)
Millwall 97 (41)
Reading 99 (41)
Swindon 61 (23)
Brentford 29 (12)
TOTAL - 495 (229)

Quite a record and after leaving Charlton he never played above 3rd tier again.
