Can anyone help identify the players/clubs on the signed menu below please?
George Jobey was Derby manager from 1925-1941 so I assume there is a Derby link.
Then 'Harry Bedford Newcastle United' - I believe Harry was part of Newcastle United's coaching staff in 1937 but joined Derby in 1938.
I don't recognise the other names as Derby players from that era. Possibly reserve players? On the date of the menu (27 December 1937) Derby beat Bolton 4-2 at home but I don't think the autographs are by the Bolton team.
One possibility is that the date is a red herring and the menu could have been used to collect a variety of autographs over a period of time.
Any assistance much appreciated.

Frank Womack played 500 games for Birmingham in the 20's then in the 30's he was manager of Grimsby and then Leicester. All the other names are very legible, which makes a nice change, but I can't find any of them as footballers. I've checked 5 or 6 of them. |

Thanks Pete. Looks like Frank Womack was managing Leicester at the time.
That's 3 signatures on there that are managers/coaches. _________________ https://www.derbycountymemories.co.uk - Rams history & memorabilia

There might be a team name written across the centre of the menu. Hard to work out , but could be Lewcosice United FC ? Frank Womack was Leicester City manager at the time . Could be a Midlands non- league team that Frank was having breakfast with. On that day ( 27 Dec 1937) he took Leicester to Liverpool to play Everton that afternoon. As you said, the menu could have been signed at a later date . Are there any Leicester players names from from that date on it? Will have a dig around . |

Can’t see any links with Newcastle Unt 1937 with regard to the signatures. It’s a tough one! |

The only possible link I can see with the players who made Central Lge appearances that season is the surname "Bailey". But his christian name began with an 'L' and that signature seems to be an 'E'.
There are a lot of Scottish references on that menu - might it have been from north of the border?
"Force" appears to be a breakfast cereal of the time - I have a London wholesaler's delicatessen catalogue of the era and it's not mentioned in there. Perhaps it was a Scottish brand?
There a few Scottish surnames on the menu, too.......just my gut instinct that the answer may lie north of the border. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

The Newcastle signature reads as Harry Bedford. A quick google check shows him as being on the Toon coaching staff in 1937 |

Figs and prunes for breakfast, those were the days.
Looks north of the border or close to it with Finnan Haddock and Scottish Kippers on the menu. |

I have looked through Fossils & Foxes the official history of Leicester City and old team pictures from that time, the only connection with Leicester is Frank Womack.
Could the menu be from a meeting of football club managers of various clubs ie the forerunner of today's league managers association. |

Thanks for all the replies so far. I was thinking along those lines regarding a meeting of managers and coaches. The date could well be a red herring with signatures collected at a different time, or even over a period of several years. _________________ https://www.derbycountymemories.co.uk - Rams history & memorabilia

Just had a quick look at 'Ind Coope and Allsopp' online which was a brewery in Burton. Surely a load of managers didn't go to a brewery for a professional meet up?!
