There was a Manchester Central Programme at Sportingold this morning that has just sold for £150 so £180-190 and add in the special postage around say £200.
I did not have this item and had a mild interest, the estimate was around £50-60 which I thought was about right for starters and I thought would end up around the £70 mark but it was not to be!.
Manchester Central was an interesting non League club, BUT they had aspirations to enter The Football League and at that point applied in 1931 but both Manchester City & Manchester United objected to the League, stating and in particular in United's case they would take spectators and revenue away from Old Trafford, as back then United were financially unstable but City were not in the same boat.
The proposed ground would be at Belle Vue on Hyde Road and City played at Hyde Road up to the 1920's before they were at Maine Road in Moss Side but Belle Vue was miles away from Old Trafford but United were the more concerned.
The League upheld City and United's[old pals act no doubt] claims and Central were shown the door, within a few seasons they had collapsed and disappeared.
On the link below is the original letter sent to the League as well as a note from the then Chairman of Manchester Central along with a couple of programmes one being a "triple header".

Manchester Central's programmes were also produced by the same printers as both City & United and all looked alike and for some daft reason the United was printed like City's in Blue ink throughout!

Prior to the auction I thought a few of the estimates were a bit pessimistic, especially for the Wigan Borough and Merthyr issues. The prices seem to have held up well. I sent in commission bids for 4 items and have missed out on the first 3. Have got one left to come.
Do the Manchester Central issues come up often? |

The last Merthyr I saw at auction was the same season and sold for over 2k. |

What I do not understand is Arsenal v Rangers 33/4 sold at £420 plus commission. |

The whole range of mid/late 20s Arsenal programmes have gone for incredible amounts. There must be a couple of highly determined collectors out there. |

I usually attend this auction and registered a few commissions bids but have only won one lot even though I was generous with my bids. I think everyone sat at home with nothing to do has helped swell the bids. |

Today was the first time I have watched the auction live. I am usually at work and, in the past and today, submit commission bids the day before. I had 4 bids today and didn’t win any. Prior to the auction I thought 3 bids had a good chance and the other (the Wigan Boro programme) was likely to be far too low (it was).
I hadn’t registered anywhere to make live bids. If I was in a position to bid, I would have gone higher on 2 items and, if I had still been unsuccessful, I would probably have bid on 3 or 4 other programmes later in the auction that I had decided against purely because I was concerned I would go over budget if the commission bids were successful.
Bidding live is a bit of a dilemma though as it must be easy to get carried away. |

Did anyone else have problems with the sound, certainly from 4pm, at the Sportingold auction today or was it solely my problem? |

Poor sound today on the internet. I never bid on internet or commission bid. Telephone for me. |
