Roger Hoy RIP

Just heard that Palace's combative midfielder of 1968-70 has passed away aged 71.

Signed from Tottenham in 1968 after an apprenticeship at WHL where he was regarded as a centre half, he played in midfield as Palace were promoted in 68/9 and then maintained our position in Div 1 in our first season ever at that level. He played a big part in that too, scoring the winning goal in the last game of that season to beat a Manchester City controversially "resting" several first team stars a few days before the Cup Winners Cup semi final. The picture shows that goal going in.

He only played 54 games for Palace (6 goals) and about the same in total at Spurs, Luton and finally Cardiff.

RIP Roger and you will never be forgotten at Selhurst Park.

Sad news, he had been poorly for some time. Quite strange to hear the news just after watching the Palace v Spurs game today. RIP and condolences to his family.

Sad news.
His ten games for Spurs were just before I started going in 1968, so I never saw him play live, but being played as a central defender would have seen him behind Mike England and Phil Beal in the pecking order at the Lane.
Palace turning him into a midfielder gave him a real chance to show what he could do.

A late addition to Roger Hoy's obituary, but thought Bluebirds fans might like this picture of him in the colours of Cardiff City, where he ended his league playing career in 1973 when this picture was taken.

Sadly his 2 seasons at Cardiff were blighted by injury but I remember him well although he only started about 14 league games for City.
