Just a heads up for anybody that doesn't know this already.
I had no idea until this morning personally.

Obviously Royal Mail "Tracked & Signed" is what it says, but any items not valuable enough to send using that service (for me, that's under a tenner) usually go "by the grace of God" and fingers crossed it gets there.

This morning I found out that any item with a reference number on your proof of postage receipt, does have tracking details of sorts that you can search.
It's limited to "Delivered" or "Returning to Sender", but accessible through the normal Royal Mail Track a Parcel site.

I used it this morning after some wise guy opened an Ebay case last night stating non delivery of an item purchased 30/9/18 which I posted the following day. The value was £7, so it went normal post.
When I asked him if he had checked with his local sorting office in case their card had been lost if he was out when they tried to deliver, he became defensive and obviously didn't want to contact them.
Something smelled a bit fishy so after speaking to the postmaster, I checked the site myself and it shows as Delivered 4/10/18.

Until that moment, I had no idea you could check non tracked items for delivery status.

Hope this helps others like me that were unaware.

I take it this is the reference number on your proof of posting receipt?

If so, how do they know it has been delivered if that reference number isn't showing on the envelope?

It is that reference number on the proof of postage receipt Tynie.

Any item that has a reference number will have a label with a barcode on it that has to be scanned by the postie once delivered apparently and that will then show on their site.

Obviously, any that just have normal stamps on are still in the lap of the Gods.

See, whenever I ask for a proof of postage there is never anything put on the envelope at all, I just get handed the white receipt which contains the basic address details of where it's going, and I guess a reference number. The envelope then gets chucked in the post bag.

Hi guys,

If you post an item at the Post Office, look out for the a printed white 2D barcode sticker which is then stuck on the envelope.

This is scanned by the Post Office scanner - which generates the reference number on your receipt.

If however you go to the Post Office with the stamps already stuck on like I sometime do, then the 2D white sticker does not get added and therefore there is no reference number generated.

I hope this help ?
