We all know the pace of technology is frightening. What seemed science fiction just a few years ago is now fact , and we hardly give it a thought.
I always wondered , what if some machine could produce a perfect copy of an ancient document ? And i don't mean a mint condition copy. I mean one that would be impossible to the naked eye to tell a copy from an original , so all the signs of an aged document. I'm not thinking programmes in particular , but general antique documents/books etc. Carbon dating people will say. But would the cost be too much for a £1,000 programme to be tested? Or will technology allow us all to buy carbon dating machines on eBay from China for a tenner ? Anyone ever given this a thought, or is it a case of not in my life time ???

Must admit it's also something I've thought about occasionally.
Especially with things like tickets.

Whether technology will eventually render paper collectibles worthless and impossible to determine.

It's not just the look though, it's the feel isn't it, and often the smell.

I'd say it is indeed a very real threat though.
We already have technology I thought impossible twenty or thirty years ago, so it's equally impossible to rule it out.

I don't think collectors have anything to fear for a few years yet. 3d printers can reproduce perfect copies of works of art down to the brush strokes, frame, and artist's signature . Of course these printers are astronomically expensive . Only very rare items would be targeted by the new fakes if they ever got in to criminals hands . Rare stamps would be very vulnerable i think. But over time all these machines will get cheaper and cheaper. It'll certainly be a very different world in only 50 years. Most of us won't be around by then so i guess it won't matter. Sad

Yes I think you're right.

However another threat that technology poses is the mere existence of collectibles.

For instance, I'm a big ticket collector Wullie, but I think their days are numbered.
Before long, hard-copy paper tickets will become a thing of the past I think, and everything like that will be transferred electronically to your mobile device.

That's something we'll definitely see in our lifetimes unfortunately buddy.

So the threat from modern technology goes beyond making life easy for the counterfeiters.

Very true and interesting. It could kill the hobby dead or maybe it could work the over way? Would a whole generation who never saw a paper ticket in their lives become absolutely fascinated by paper tickets and start to collect them . In a future cashless society , will people stop collecting coins and bank notes ? I very much doubt it.

I keep (collect) my season tickets, they are something I am proud of, a physical representation of my support if you like.

Next season for the first time, my club (Palace) aren't issuing new season ticket cards, but just reloading the current seasons ones for those who are renewers.

Not the end of the world but a shame. When its a cup game I always opt for a paper ticket, rather than 'load to card' but I suspect in a few years time that won't be an option Sad

Yep, sign of the times sadly buddy.

There's ten or so season tickets & staff passes I left off my Flickr site, because they had photo ID and addresses on them - and I've no wish for my identity to be splashed on the internet.
One of the reasons I shun social media is because I find it far too intrusive.

I've nothing to hide from (apart from the usual vengeful ex), it's just I'm a guy who likes his privacy, something that is getting harder to maintain in the modern world.

I must be doing something right though because I'm still "un-google-able."

Smile

Hopefully, once technology has sadly ousted the thrill of holding an actual printed ticket, their desirability will increase tenfold.
I would have already said that over the past few years they've been one of the fastest growing aspects of this hobby as it is.

Programmes I would imagine, whilst being under a similar threat, that their demise is not nearly as imminent.
For now at least, I think the demand for a hard-copy, printed match-day programme will still be there whatever the technology.

After our generation shuffles off this blue marble though, I'm not so sure ... ?

I noticed Viago site offers you an option of a paper ticket for theatre shows etc. as some people like to keep them as souvenirs. Couldn't football clubs not offer the same service to it's loyal fans ? OK stop laughing.
