Inspired by the folks on here, I thought I'd have a bash at one of those free Flickr sites.

I'm notoriously hopeless with technology at the best of times, so I'm not sure how viewer friendly it is, or even if I've done everything right.
I think I have?

Plus some of the pics aren't the best - lots are crooked etc because when I originally scanned them they were only ever intended to be for "checking" purposes so I didn't buy the same badge again - plus my faithful old scanner is on its lazzies, bless her.

Anyway, here's my effort - still have some more to add but I'm all Flickr'd out now ...

Great job Wiggy. Call Mr thick though, but there are some pics where there are 4 matchbafges shown yet I can only see 2 different versions. Eg Accrington 13/14. Are there really differences across all 4 or am I going mad???

Cheers Dorking, yes they're all complete sets and all different badges.

The ones that appear to be the same colours are different variations that were produced in both gilt (gold) and chrome (silver) mate.

Not easy to see from the photos, but very easily identifiable in the flesh.

I was wondering if I was able to tag a brief description onto each pic?
Just what they were, the year of issue etc.

No probs, different coloured metal is a perfectly valid collecting obsession!

It's a necessity at small clubs to ensure they all sell quickly mate.

We only have a small band of dedicated collectors so it ensures folk buy 4 instead of 1.
Much easier to flog 25 of each than 100 all the same.
Especially as the production cost is exactly the same.

I don't mind at all, I'm always happy to have a nice set of variations.

Looks great - very nice collection and the scans are nice and clear.

I was taken by the "Great Escape" badges from 1977 - the same phrase was used on the programme for the Workington game too?

Just remind me - these were the days before relegation to the Conference....was it just a case of avoiding the re-election process or was there a bit more to it than that?

Cheers mate.

I was only 9 at the time Steve, but as I understand it, both Newport and Workington were such habitual abusers of the re-election system, it had been generally agreed amongst the other clubs that year that if either of them finished in the bottom four, they would be voted out.

In short, both had exhausted their 'nine lives.'

So as fate would have it, the last two games of the season were Workington home & away - County won both 1-0 and escaped by the skin of their teeth.

Something we're unlikely to do this year the way things are panning out unfortunately!

Thanks for the info - I do have those Workington programmes....somewhere!
A year or two later, Colin Addison was at the Baseball Ground.

The re-election process was always a bit murky - how did Hartlepools survive so often? Well, rumours abound of targeted hospitality!

One of my earliest football memories is of Frank Bough, round about 5pm one Saturday in 1972, announcing that Barrow had been "removed" from the League.
For whatever reason, that television image is quite clear in my mind.
He looked quite surprised.
At that age, I doubt I even knew what "re-election" meant.

If Hereford hadn't had that Cup run, perhaps Barrow would still be a league club.

Still plenty games left for Newport - but they need some sort of boost to their confidence.
Probably didn't help seeing Plymouth do what they did at Anfield.

I think come the 1970s the "old pals act" amongst league chairmen was becoming frowned upon, as the same old suspects were reprieved year after year.

14 times for us I believe, off the top of my head.
Clubs like Hartlepools and Rochdale always seemed to be down there too, as you say.

A lot of excellent non league clubs were denied entry under that flawed system.
I guess that's what happens when you ask turkeys to vote for Christmas mate.

Agreed.
To get thrown out of the league seems to have been down to timing, if anything.
Like Barrow with Hereford and, especially, Gateshead with Peterborough.

I have a 60s brochure that Chelmsford City produced to support their bid - it's as upbeat a statement as a club could make. Perhaps too upbeat.

I suppose the present rationale, based on the meritocracy principle, is preferable........but the romantic in me doesn't much care for grand old clubs such as Stockport, York and Halifax ejected in favour of what replaced them.
