This was auctioned this morning and has fetched £1100 + the 20% commission, so at around £1300 quid is this the most expensive badge ever?.

I have seen the same style of enamel badge a few times with the same identical player pose albeit kicking with the other foot so opposite to this in a a Red shirt and for other clubs, but with no name [some are on ebay for Everton and Bristol Rovers as BIN at £150 but nothing to show it is actually THAT particular club] but never in the mid 1920's kit and the Manchester United name. The auction house states that to the rear the it says "Foreign Made", so maybe this is Eastern European.

quite possible the pin has been replaced over time or just a crude method to solder it on nearly a 100 or so years ago.

This was in an auction of antique/bric a brack and was the only football related item, which shows that the saleroom certainly like that beer advert years ago "gets to parts others don't"!

Had this been at a recognized Football Auction i wonder if this price would have been passed or not?

Confirms my suspicions that i have always held that there is still stuff hidden away that has never surfaced for years, the vendor in this case may have been happy at the £30-£50 estimate and has now had a windfall beyond their wildest dreams-i suppose it is a win win for buyer and seller as to get to that level of pricing someone had to drop out so if the eventual owner thinks he went a bit too far then he can console himself there was another like minded person around.

A most unique badge for sure.

All good fun eh Wave

It's a beautiful badge for sure.

Our most expensive (to my knowledge) was this one that sold to the Russian collector with the museum-standard website, about two or three years ago on eBay for £1005.00 ... (yep, over a grand) ...

... he blew all the interested County collectors away unfortunately.

I heard afterwards it was found in a charity shop too!
So that would have been another surprised yet delighted vendor.

I wouldn't be surprised if this lovely United badge isn't heading to the same collection Leslie.
His funds seem bottomless.

Very interesting indeed for sure, but just like this morning there was an under bidder so someone else must have been bidding around the £980 mark or so and surely there were not 2 Ruskies chasing it! Laughing

I have heard about this person before from Russia but it always struck me that whoever it is, is paying top dollar as in my opinion their intentions could be at a later date to copy them and this way could try and recoup the money back and still retain the original but of course i could be totally way off base, yet has anyone ever seen this Russian badge collection?-must be quite amazing i bet.

I have seen some United badges over the last 2-3 years emanating from Eastern Europe purporting to be from pre-war days but despite the protestations of the sellers they were all copies made recently, that part of the World has been producing badges for many years so for them to reproduce anything would not be difficult.
I have a friend who is in Czechoslovakia who is reputed to have the finest MUFC badge collection with around 2000 just for United and he had never seen the one that sold this morning in the White strip but had seen one in the Red.

I was offered a virtual identical badge recently all in Red with no name for around £200-250 the same as the ones on ebay but again nothing to determine it is a United item and no name so as nice as it was i had to say no thanks.

Thumbs Up

Yes this Russian collector's website is online, but I can't find the link for it now Leslie.

I'm sure somebody will have it though, he has an astonishing collection of rare badges for all British clubs.

This is the Russian website for Palace (other teams can easily be found from this)

http://www.piterbadge.com/badge/32/57

Number 2 on that page is the Palace version of that old rare footballer, number 1 on the Palace page, the 'Director' badge might as well be made of gold, as I was offered it once for a cool £1000 (had to pass, way out of my league!!!)

That's the one, cheers Dorking.

To translate the page to English (to enable you to read the side-bar menu), just right-click your mouse or keypad, and the "Translate" option pops up.

Nobody stands an earthly with this chap whenever anything old & rare appears on eBay.
He'll pay literally anything to brush aside the competition.
Money is no object.

Here is his British club index ... (as sadly predicted, it looks as if he indeed is the buyer of the United badge in Leslie's post) ...

I'm not a badge collector but I'm pleased to say I have a few Palace badges this Russian guy doesn't. I expect you have too, Dorking.

A couple of thousand that aren't on there Pete. Sadly the vast, vast majority are worth less than a fiver (and most a lot less than that!). To me they are still priceless of course.

Very interesting site indeed but there is no way i can get it to translate into English, also is there an email link at all as i wanted to ask some questions to whoever it is whose site/collection it is but clicking on the envelope like the translation does nothing to switch it on!-do you have anymore information at all? piter sounds like Peter.

Thanks Wave

Leslie - right click on the ENG at the top (below "SPORTSBADGE COLLECTION SITE") and then you get a drop-down menu - you should see "Translate with Bing" - then click on that.

I was expecting a rendition of White Christmas but instead I got it all in English.

LOL!!!! Laughing

A simple "right click" of the mouse or keypad works on all my devices.

The white box pops up and one of the options contained therein is "Translate to English."

Failing that, use the "club index" link I provided, which takes you straight to the list index for all British clubs.

Going back to the original question, i.e. is this the most expensive badge ever?, I would say almost certainly not.

I have a vague recollection some years back of seeing an early "England vs. Scotland Committee" badge from the 1900s going for two and a half grand, which was 9c gold.

I would imagine there have been others too that would have exceeded that £1300 and possibly even that aforementioned £2500.

tried that and it is not offering that.

Anyway perhaps as you seem to have no issues can you get the email address by clicking on it as that is all i really want-seeing all the pages is no issue or even looking at the links to other UK clubs badges sites including the Forum.

Hope you can help-thanks in advance

Sadly my most valuable badges are a few in the £150 range.

Just like my club, I'm strictly Fourth Division compared to the wonderful museums brilliantly put together by Piter and Leslie, the Champions League of collections.

I'd be fibbing if I didn't say there are more valuable badges out there that I'd dearly love to have, but on the whole, I tend to buy what I like as opposed to what I think I should.

So my badge collection tends to be rather eclectic once you veer away from the Newport stuff, with all sorts of subjects that remind me of my youth.

It's rule number one isn't it, collect what pleases you.

Thumbs Up

I'm not a badge collector but I do have a couple of Hearts ones from the 1950's that are my dads and have seen plenty of use!

Question, is there such a things as a badge restorer? replacing chipped enamel, fixing clasps etc?

From my experience i can say NEVER attempt restoration on the enamel as it is virtually impossible to get a match as usually the materials used were made in a different composition perhaps and when i have seen it done it has ruined the badge appearance completely and what value it had has gone completely, BUT you can get the pins replaced which is a simple task by going to a Jeweller on the high street but ask if they have any older actual pins themselves as i have seen Edwardian badges with bright chromed pin on the back which looks awful, you are not looking to kid anyone just trying to get something that tones in or go to a flea or antique market and buy any ladies brooch or similar for a £1 or two and any competant jeweller can take the older pin one off and re solder it. Hope this helps Thumbs Up

I'd replace a busted or missing pin, but I too am not a fan of restoration.

I like things in their natural state, whatever that may be.

I quite like old items to look 'distressed,' it gives a flavour of them having lived a life - they never seem quite as real or interesting being pristine when they're decades and decades old.

The flaws only add character and a sense of history in my opinion.
