Hi Holtie, great photo, doesn`t look look like Charlie Buchan to me, not tall enough either, wondering if the photo was taken at the Crystal Palace, hard to tell, is there a caption at all with the photo, the other players in the photo should help identify the team and then the match being played

Hi Holtie This photo may help, looking at the Prince and what he is wearing this photo was probably taken the same day, which was at the Crystal Palace

Early twenties in my opinion, difficult to pinpoint the game, possibly a Charity match, wouldn`t have thught it was a league game or Cup match.

Definitely not Charles Buchan . The Prince was a small guy while Buchan was over 6 foot tall.

Sydenham Hill's photo, "Our Popular Prince", appears in the wonderful book "To the Palace for the Cup", on page 123. The chapter is entitled "A Feast of Amateur Football" and the caption under this image says "The Prince of Wales at a football match during the 1920's". Not very helpful!

The Corinthians played there, and the Casuals, while they were both looking for a new home. Corinthians played the first game there after the war on 11th September 1922 - perhaps, for that occasion, the Prince may have been present? But they played a long list of opponents in that period, from Tottenham Hotspur on that day in 1922 to Bristol Rovers in 1937 through Everton, Blackburn, Birmingham, Manchester City, etc, so it's conceivable the Prince may have attended one of those games.

Casuals played in the Isthmian League then and played there between 1922 and 1925, against the likes of Dulwich Hamlet and Wimbledon.

Where did your suggested 1927 come from? Corinthians played about 15 games there in that year.

Hi and thanks
The photo is a postcard photo and one is listed ironically on eBay and claims to be 1927 Arsenal
I now think it is Cardiff city as the kit matches the one worn in the 1927 final ?

I think the player is Cardiff captain Fred Keenor . Both the player and the prince were 5 feet 5 . Other photos on the web bare a resemblance. And the prince was the Prince of Wales. Confused

It may be Fred Keenor but it can't be the FA Cup Final at Wembley surely.
The chap standing behind the Prince (far right) has what looks like a pick-axe in his hands!

If it`s Cardiff City then it probably isn`t the Crystal Palace, i Know Cardiff did play Crystal Palace in the Southern league at the Palace but that was before the Ist World War, this photo to me was taken after the war, if it is Fred Keenor it is a very young Fred

He was captain from 1922 and he would have been 28 at the time and 33 in time for the 1927 final. He also played in the 1925 final against Sheffield United

Thought about the charity shield matches, but no matches were played at crystal palace. So that one is another to cross off!
