A sad story about the great player in today's DT.

Brentford FC held a benefit match for Tommy in the 1984/85 season. It raised around £3500 for him. He suffered with hardship all his life after his football career ended. Only had a short spell as player and then manager at Brentford, but was held in high regard at GP.

What a sad story that is. As the journalist said, you can't imagine Wayne Rooney (as an example, he doesn't stand out more than anyone else, surely - let alone the journalist himself - or even little old me, for God's sake) going through the same ordeal.

And how awful that his 30-year friendship with Richard Attenborough ended over 2 cup final tickets when Lawton's new boss failed to pay for them.

Anyway, 2 nice photos of Tommy to remind us of the man who lit up the game either side of WW2.

Framed photo I have of Fred Dawes shaking hands with Tommy Lawton before the game in February 1949 at Selhurst Park between Crystal Palace and Notts County which County won 5-1 with Lawton scoring the fifth goal.
Excuse quality of scan but am unable to remove photo from frame

Nearly forgot, here's Tommy challenging Palace's Dick Graham in the same game as Nutfield's photo above. CORRECTION - NOT THE SAME GAME - my photo is dated 10th September 1949. More haste, less speed!

What a fantastic photograph, Pete.
The action on the field, the crowd, the housing in the background.
Love it.
