Still a new collector in my book having only been doing it for a year.

Just how do find out/keep track of all P-P, friendlies, issues or reissues or not etc.

Just how do you know you have a defintive list. Soccerbase give all competitive games of course but how do others define a full list or how do they get it?

I am on the threshold just collecting a few seasons to possibly making it a lifetime hobby from now but I worry that not knowing full info will put me off.

Opinions and hep greatfully recieved.

You learn as you go along, you ask questions, you get info from programmes, other collectors, your own website, researching your club history, sometimes stumbling across relevant info when you're not looking for it. I wouldn't put myself off by thinking that I will never have a complete collection.

You never know completely

I still know that some Plymouth collectors have Rochdale (a) 58/89 and Queen of the South friendly on their wants list even though it is 99.999999% certain neither game had programme!

Every year something crops up that no-one knew about....so you just add tot he lsit and await your turn from the Gods of collecting ( or auctioneers snd dealers as I call them)

But for a good rundown of Plymouth friendlies and matches v Torquay you can't do much better than greens on screen!

Surely each club must have a historian.

He/she would have a dinfinative list.....

That would be my first port of call ...

You could say ignorance is bliss. I have a wide collection and have the same problem. It's just part of the learning curve and you add to your knowledge as you progress, the unexpected discoveries are often a real joy, especially if you get them and don't add them to your wants lists. Obviously there will be less finds as your collection develops. So I would not be too concerned about what you don't yet know and get into your collecting.

The other day a Sunderland friendly turned up on eBay . In 30 years I had no idea the game was played. Never seen it listed before. It happens.

Until recently, Spain v Scotland 1975 was thought to be a non-issue, since then a couple of copies have appeared.

Scotland v Belgium Feb 79 was postponed and nothing printed, until a printers copy turned up recently.

It does happen.

There's no such thing as a definitve list when it comes to programmes.

I reckon I have the most complete list of all post war Blackpool programmes but in the last couple of years 2 programmes have surfaced that no one knew existed.

It's what makes collecting so addictive. You never know what's around the corner.

Club historians are generally experts on games played, results, scorers, players records and the general history of a club but knowledge of whether a programme was issued for a particularly match is not normally of concern.

Club programme historians is what is needed and this site goes a long way to fulfilling that role for quite a few clubs.

Richard Owen is / was the Pompey historian but he was not very helpful when I contacted him a couple of years ago re access to the Pompey archive.

Thankfully, now Pompey is a Community Club they are a lot more helpful.

Yes, a few of the club historians I have contacted over the years have been rather secretive about the information they hold.

I must be lucky as our Statistician is fantastic with me. He's hopeless with technology and everything is on paper but his records are very good. He's also collected Posh programmes for more than 40 years so has an excellent knowledge of most issues

Now that, for the life of me, I cannot understand.

Misprints on dealers' catalogues can take on a life of their own.

There have been rumours over the years about a 59/0 Derby v Celtic friendly match which never took place - chances are it was a Derry v Celtic programme which some dealer inadvertently misspelt.

Word gets round and before you know it, it's on every Derby collector's wants list.

And, of course, it doesn't exist.

Probably Smile
