This is a question I never expected to have need to ask. I am a Gateshead supporter and programme collector, but I don't collect anything from when we were in the Football League ie my collection is exclusively non-league era, post 1960. However, by 6.00pm Sunday we could be back in the League - so, do I stop collecting new issues and simply concentrate on filling in the gaps, or do I carry on? Is it useful to work toward a finite goal and concentrate my limited cash there? What happens if we go up then come down again - do I re-start? Would the gap in the collection then be irritating? What do you think?
(Cambridge supporters please note that I accept this could also be irrelevant by 6.00pm Sunday!)

STOP. By the time you reach the Premiership your house will be overflowing with worthless bits of paper. If anything go back in time. Gateshead first time in the league games are a bargain at the moment

Carry on collecting, fill the gaps in the current collection and if finances allow one day work your way back through the former league seasons.

I am sure you won't be able to resist collecting a full season for at least the 1st season back in the league.

All hypothetical of course.

As Gateshead are a realtive new club (1977) I would say you have a fairly easy and short collecting period, and should include football league

Maybe just buy the early football league programmes then buy the rest of the season when the prices come down, nearly all modern programmes can be picked up cheaply after the event, however early ones might sell-out

Carry on,If you fill in all or most of the gaps, you "WILL" start collecting the football league issues and might find yourself with a few hard to get ones and generally paying through the nose for them plus postage.

Do you think Gary Mills will stop his players from simulating being fouled and deliberately getting players sent off if they go up?

Here's an idea for you. Forget about the next season but only for that one season. Pick them up next season and continue like that. Meanwhile concentrate on filling the gaps.

This is indeed a good question to ask. Firstly I also collect Gateshead but only from their last League season 59/60 up to 77/8. Although I can't be there I will be following the game and rooting for them. As I am long in the tooth I was incensed when they were cruelly expelled from the League even though they finished third from bottom. They deserve to be back, and have waited long enough!! Up the Heed.
Gateshead after folding in the 60's were reborn as Town, then folded again and reborn as United finally reverting to Gateshead in 77/8. This raises the question of parameters. IMO if a team has various reincarnations and then gets back to its original name then it is the same team,(ignore AFC add ons) even if there are gaps in the continuity. They would not want to be calling themselves the original name if they did not want to be thought of as part of that club's history. Similarly Newport County went to AFC Newport and back again. So a different name is a different club until they revert. Others might disagree as is their prerogative.
Now in answer to your question yes collect anything and everything Gateshead, it's all part of the club history, you are only governed by your wallet.

As a Torquay supporter going back into Non League, interestingly, this thread has given me the enthusiasm to collect some different years.

I am still a fairly new collecter, only began about a year ago. I wondered at the start how to avoid spending the life savings lol (£2.34) by buying anything and everything: At the time I limited myself to collecting two seasons home and away but...

Given Torquay are going back into Non League, I am now going to collect all the Non League issues, perhaps a year behind for less as noted above. This means I can also collect the two years we were down before. Means I am collecting 5 seasons at mo then and that is within my budget!

I do pick up little gems now and again on Ebay, but they are in the 'to be collected season' box in the distant future.

Would be interested to know how others began collecting and how they limited themselves?

For the record, I consider the current club to be the same as the original one that started in 1930, and collecting their non-league issues therefore covers from 1960 rather than 1977. IF we go up I think there will be demand for programmes that would prevent collecting a season in arrears. As for Grimsby, if they could rouse themselves with 11 men they'd be a better side. They didn't start playing until the first sending-off (which was a terrible decision by the referee). The second red card was surely an obvious one though, John?

Come on John they would never do that - even if there is a faint suspicion that they did it against Aldershot and got our top scorer sent off

and there's me thinking this was a serious thread about collecting programmes and now it's about apparent simulation from the disgruntled! Could we have a new thread for this please?

O`Donnells the name, Absolutely dirty cheat, faked his injury gets a fellow professional sent off (and banned!) then turned around and smiled (n winked) at the 29 travelling Gateshead fans (how many to Wembley??).

Hope Cambridge whip `em!

Collecting one season in arrears can be a false economy if you end up splashing out for half-a-dozen sell-outs.

For AFC Wimbledon's first league season I went down the road of emailing the host club before every away game to enquire about buying a programme and teamsheet and then sending off a cheque. A bit of a hassle but worth it and all programmes were obtained at cover price, plus about half the clubs obliged by including a teamsheet.

Pre-1930 there were also incarnations of the Gateshead club which entered the Football League, weren't there? For example, there was definitely a Gateshead Town before WW1...

I think you'll find that was South Shields, not Gateshead. Gateshead Town were never a Football League side.
