It's the new Gold Rush. Are 1970 reserve programmes scarcer than pre war programmes ? In Chelsea's case most certainly yes....

I wonder if the bidder who paid £420 for it knows its a REPRINT as I have a lot of Brum issues from the 1970s and they are all in blue ink. Sherlock

4 bids to get to £420.....it goes from £8.99 to £410 in one bid?

Looks a bit strange to me.

Still, I'm tempted to get my Birmingham v Chelsea 79/80, blue ink copy on there! Smile

I think any Blackpool Reserves home that involved Manchester United Johnathon is always going to sell for more than £10-15 quid in reality.

The 1963 item i already had so there was no interest from myself but the seller added some marketing facts and hooked in a punter although i have to say i am sceptical.

Anyway around the same time a Blackpool v United reserves was also on ebay 1961-2 from a well know Blackpool collector/dealer whom we both know and that one was sold for the princely sum of £34 which in itself is a very high price-but it is MU involved. Not wishing in any way to sound crass or demeaning to any other clubs, if the opposition was not United but anyone else[bar say Leeds United] it would have sold for just a few pounds such is the power as a seller of having anything re MU or Leeds or Chelsea in particualr if it is not the regular fodder.

What annoys me also is that a lot of Pre-War items involving Man City are always on ebay and BIN but never hardly sell and they get offered for peanuts! Sheff U v City in the 1920's for BIN £80 still not sold if that was MU or Leeds in particular it would NEVER be offered on a BIN unless the seller was not a collector or totally clueless.

Everyone has debated the MU factor a million times before but it still wrankles.

Conversely MU items will hold their value better than others so there is some value in having to pay top $ all the time.

Generally true Leslie but this estimate is based on a couple I have sold in the last 12 months.

Interesting.

It would be interesting to know if there are / will be any new Manchester United collectors with big wallets entering the market.

If not then surely competition for items will dry up and prices will fall over time.

Never going to happen Martin that certainly as far as MU is concerned collecting will simply dry up and no one will ever come into the hobb in my opinion.

Such is the power of the "brand" as it is now referred too, there will always be new kids on the block and a testimont to this is this crazy Adidas deal for 75 million a year.

Of course we are talking global sales and global marketing to hundreds of millions of fans where as our small hobby may not have the millions of fans looking to collect[thank goodness] but there has been a steady stream over the years and no doubt will be in the future when all the dross of recent times is acquired and collectors want to go back further.

This is another good reason for any collector to have their own identity on their own web page like flickr or any other-once you get into the public domain the number of requests are quite high for copies or questions or even like this morning i was sent an image of a signed postcard from a chap who lived next door to a United player who went on their 1967 Australian Tour, so bringing the hobby to the forefront will ensure many more collectors may just follow hopefully, wel that is my take on it!

25 years ago i won on Sports Programmes a 1908 Charity Shield programme and i paid £350-i was told by everyone i had taken leave of my senses, i was paying crazy price-Roy at Sports told me as he handed it over it will be a sound investment, today if you can find one it has held it's value and is worth £1000's in fact 2 months ago one was in a Chelsea BV from 1908 and the cost of the entire volume was not as much as that one item was worth!

Moral is the quality items and i mean real quality do not dip-just look at auction results of late, the day to day stuff is stagnant but as they say the cream always rises to the top!
