When was the last time 3 penalties were given against United at Old Trafford, and did the taker, if it was just one, get his hat trick? I am sure members would be interested in any other unusual penalty games in the League in any of the divisions if you have details to share.

I remember Palace getting a penalty at OT once, 1969-70. Stepney brought down Cliff Jackson, then saved John Sewell's pen, but Sewell squeezed home the rebound. 1:1 draw. I don't think we've been in their penalty area since (apart from when we've won).

Most infamous penalty match in Palace's history was v Brighton 27.3.89. Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record 5 pens in the game, 4 to Palace, one to Brighton. All were clear pens as far as I can recall. Palace scored the first (Mark Bright) then Bright, Ian Wright and John Pemberton all missed. (For Pemberton, think Jason Puncheon at Spurs, I hear the Russians are trying to dock them together in space). Brighton scored theirs (Trusson?). 2:1 home win.

I don't know about games at Old Trafford but I seem to recall that the highest number of penalties awarded in an English game is 5 and that was between Crystal Palace and Brighton sometime in the 80s.

I am sure there are people on here who will confirm or refute this.

I think there was also a red card in this game and that was Trusson.

Not quite the same as Gerrard missed his third penalty at Old Trafford :-

but Jan Molby of Liverpool once scored a hat-trick of penalties in a league cup match against Coventry City (November 1986).

"The Great Dane has the rare record of scoring a penalty hat-trick, a feat achieved in November 1986 against Coventry in the League Cup".

Very special player Nod

After the game at the weekend, Gerrard was interviewed and he mentioned the Molby game, it may have been the first game he saw at Anfield.

Kenners, you may be right about Curbishley, Brighton players all look the same.

Was not the United keeper Alex Stepney once the leading goal scorer in the First Divison at one time ?,
At the begining of the 70s early season he became there main peno taker and was quite succesful hence his leading scorer tag .
But i do remember a game i was at at OT and the Wolves keeper Gary Pierce saving one from him Stretford End in a 0-0 draw and Stepney having to leg it back to his own goal to prevent a quick counter attack from Wolves .
Have a strong feeling he was never entrusted with any more after this miss.

Swindon v Walsall 1975-76 was also a game where 4 pens wer given. Alan Buckley scored first for Walsall but a Trevor Anderson hat trick of pens put Swindon 3-1 up - and then went on to win 5-1.

In 1999, Martin Palermo missed three penalties for Argentina. They lost 3-0 to Columbia in the Copa America.

Just 8 days ago there were four penalties scored in Gillingham's 4-2 win over Coventry City, two for each team Sherlock

I think it was the season United were relegated to the 2nd Division in 1973/4.

Something that will never ever happen again according to a recent post on here.

Stepney was United's top scorer with 2 penalties until about Christmas of that season when he was eventually overtaken.
Liverpool's penalties were the first away league pens at OT since 2011. Wouldn't happen under Fergie! But then the shambolic defending generally didn't happen under Fergie. Liverpool's aggressive running style and knack of playing balls in behind defenders has caused consternation. How many penalties is that this season?

My records show 10 penalties awarded to Liverpool this season by far the most in the Premier League.

It seems Cardiff have had none.

Remember watching Alan Slough score a hat trick on pens at Chester in 77/8 season, we still lost 4-3 and missed out on promotion 3 days later on goal difference

I should probably point out that although Cardiff have had no penalties awarded this season, they have none given against them either.
