just sat down to look through my new purchase of Findons Football Handbook 1948/49 and came across this article:

'Soccer's Costliest Stars Today'
L. Shackleton Newcastle to Sunderland march 1948 - £20050
G.Lowrie Coventry to Newcastle April 1948 - £20000
T.Lawton Chelsea to Notts County November 1948 - £17000
W.Steel Morton to Derby June 1947 - £15500
Bryn Jones Wolves to Arsenal August 1948 - £14000
A.Stubbins Newcastle to Liverpool September 1946 - £13000
S.Matthews Stoke to Blackpool May 1948 - £11500 (new record for a winger)
W.Wardle Grimsby to Blackpool May 1948 - £11000
A.Forbes Sheff Utd to Arsenal February 1948 - £11000
T.Ford Swansea to Aston V illa January 1947 - £10500

How much for these stars today? Sherlock

Running the figures through the retail price index the following would be the current transfer figures (assuming my calculations are correct)

'Soccer's Costliest Stars Today'
L. Shackleton Newcastle to Sunderland march 1948 - £20050 (£650,000)
G.Lowrie Coventry to Newcastle April 1948 - £20000 (£640,000)
T.Lawton Chelsea to Notts County November 1948 - £17000 (£540,000)
W.Steel Morton to Derby June 1947 - £15500 (£530,000)
Bryn Jones Wolves to Arsenal August 1948 - £14000 (£450,000)
A.Stubbins Newcastle to Liverpool September 1946 - £13000 (£450,000)
S.Matthews Stoke to Blackpool May 1948 - £11500 (new record for a winger) (£370,000)
W.Wardle Grimsby to Blackpool May 1948 - £11000 (£350,000)
A.Forbes Sheff Utd to Arsenal February 1948 - £11000 (£350,000)
T.Ford Swansea to Aston Villa January 1947 - £10500 (£360,000)

Cheap at ten times the price.

I think Bryn Jones moved to Arsenal in 1938, not 1948.

£17,000 for Tommy Lawton - nowadays that would buy you 5 minutes of Wayne Rooney's time.

Moving the timeline of these great players forward a little bit ......

I remember reading about a player who was transferred in exchange for a whole bunch of brand new tracksuits, I am pretty confident that the player in question was ......

Tony Cascarino Shocked

Pre-Millwall days I presume, (possibly in Ireland somewhere) but perhaps someone from the forum can confirm or deny this ?

It would be a great story if true Confused ....

Quite true.

I believe there was also a quantity of corrugated iron thrown in as part of the deal too?

Gillingham signed Cascarino from Kent club Crockenhill for a set of tracksuits.

Back in the 20's (and I can't quite recall the details) a player was transferred from Hartlepools to Darlington (or the other way round) for a box of kippers.

Well spotted!
It did say 1938 in the book, but as it was all about transfers in the late 40s I thought it was a typo! Just shows what I know Very Happy

In 2002 Kenneth Kristensen moved from Vindbjart to Floey in the Norwegian 3rd Division.

The striker was sold for his body weight in shrimps.

Before the completion of the transfer the player had an official weigh-in that landed Vindbjart 75kg of shrimps.

actually that is even more of an issue...salaries. How can you ever justify someone getting even 50 grand a week yet that is the bottom end of the scale for an average premiership player.

If memory serves, Zat Knight joined Fulham from Rushall Olympic in a similar deal. Not being contracted to Olympic they were not due a fee, however, Fulham made a 'gesture'.
