Very sad indeed to hear this.

A gentleman and a great player from the days when it was the football that counted and not a club's balance sheet or brand value.

I wonder how many of the present day players have even heard of him?

Sir Tom in his last game for Preston, with his auto. A true legend when the word meant something. I wish I'd seen him play.

Funny story

My ex wife's step dad ( Ernie ) was the same age as ir Tom and played against him in school matches ,

' Had a nasty habit did Tom , always kicked the ball a few yards in front and ran after it , ' ' never got passed me . '

' Oh ye ' i thought - pull the other one .

In the front garden one day and who stopped to say hello - Sir Tom

' You all right Ernie ? '

Apparently it was his regular walk

Very surreal .

First big match l went with my dad was Everton V Preston NE in 1958, only went, as my dad was a big Tom Finney fan

Managed to see Tom Finney after he retired as he was playing some charity matches and he was still good ! , lovely Gent and a great footballer

Strangely this week I have been editing some of my research into my late Uncle and the following in particular:

"An example of Eddie’s ability to appreciate the skills in other players is shown in the programme notes for the home match with Sheffield Wednesday on 7th September 1957. Eddie’s notes included the following on Pompey’s recent defeat at Preston:

“The Preston hoo-doo reared its ugly head again on Saturday when we were defeated 4-0.

After our players’ outstanding performance against Tottenham we were very hopeful that our lads would bring back at least a point from our visit to Preston, but Tom Finney and his pals had other ideas!!

There are few inside trios as clever and as intelligent as Finney, Thompson and Baxter, whose intelligent positioning and use of the ball had to be admired, even by ourselves."

R.I.P. Tom
