Post subject: What are 1970s football club badges worth?

Hi All,

Now, I know nothing about football badges except some are worth money and lots more aren't.

Recently, in an antique shop I was offered five, quite large card boards nearly full with English football club and world national association badges dating from the early-mid 1970s.

One board was was 90% complete with English clubs, while the other four had badges of most of the world's national team associations on separated by continent. I don't know the material they were from (not plastic though) and I couldn't see the maker's name anywhere but I think they're foreign, possibly Eastern European. The badges (approx 150 of them) were generally small but in good condition, while the 30 x 60cm card boards they were pinned to were a bit marked and looking their age, as were the flimsy wooden frames.

From this admittedly very general description, can anyone advise how much foreign football badges from the 1970s might be worth so I can decide whether to buy them or not? I've also attached a photo from my camera. I'm not sure I'd look to sell them on or split them up, but it would be good to have a rough idea of what badges are worth/what the guidelines are anyway.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

A couple of hundred for the lot so I'd certainly like to know if they're worth it!

The English ones you could get from at least £3 plus for them maybe be more, How many English ones are there?
Without seeing the others maybe a £1 each depending what they are.

Probably 70 English ones. Not sure I'd want to split up the whole collection though - I'd like to keep it together if possible; that's another reason not to sell it on, I guess!

Thanks, but I'll see how it goes myself first! The main purpose of me raising it here was to seek assurance that I'm buying something that I won't lose out on if and when I sell. Badges aren't my usual thing but I'd be quite happy to get them if I can:)

So there are approximately 150 foreign badges and about 70 English ones.

I would definitely grab these if the shop wants around £200.

You may also be able to haggle a little and anything below this figure is a bargain in my opinion.

There's a Crystal Palace one on that image, I may be wrong (and there's a chap here called Dorking who knows far more than me) but I would say that one is worth £5 at least.

£3-£5 across the board....... mostly quite common from what I can see..... in the 70's & 80's most badges were produced in high numbers hence there low value.

Thanks, the help is much appreciated. As I say, the five boards are probably 90% complete, e.g. on the European confederation board, England, Scotland and the big foreign nations' badges are there, but Wales, Northern Ireland and Greenland (!) are not. In addition, I don't know how interesting the badges of the Burundi, Indonesia, Nigeria, USA... etc national team associations are!

In your opinion is it a massive shame if badge collections like this are split and never resurface together again, or is it very much par for the course in badge-collecting circles?

For more detailed info, I guess I should make the effort to shell out and then post more pictures. I'll see what I can do.

The Palace one on there is worth about £5-£7

The law of averages is that a few of the English ones will go for at least a tenner, if so then you're winning. There's often no knowing which ones will get the best price, its just down to luck as to which ones are wanted by two or three collectors

Thanks. Here are some more photos (sorry about the poor quality of the English FA badge at the end). I've got them so it's done and dusty, sorry, dusted now - I'm just in two minds whether to sell them individually or as a whole collection to fund my main programme and ticket collection, or to keep them all and re-frame them. Advice and suggestions welcome!

I see it has not taken you too long to decide to put them on Ebay.

The starting price will put people off though.

That looks like a fantastic collection of badges.

What an insult for an offer though - £2000 Shocked

I wonder how they thought they would get away with that.

That £30,000 estimate was a low buying price. They had 20 + shoe box size boxes of cup final badges from all years. My wife works in the Jewellery Quarter in Brum and she mentioned it to me (When it was too late)
