I've been following the enclosed badge on ebay for the past week and to my surprise it sold earlier today for in excess of £1,000. Can anybody shed any light on what makes this badge so desirable?

Two words Scotty ... the Russians.

One of the big Russian collectors will have bought that matey, pound to a penny, they pay wild prices for the rare old British club team badges.

Can't see any of our fellow County collectors paying that sort of price for a badge that is worth £180 to £250 max buddy.

Nice badge though, hadn't seen that one before myself - I bet the seller is very happy, and a little shocked! Laughing

Without a doubt, the Russians are terrible and crazy people! But for your information, the badge was bought by Czech collector and one of the English collectors made a bet of 605 pounds

Fascinating how a Czech collector is willing the pay that type of money for a badge from an old 4th Division team. I'm assuming that he buys up other old british badges for similiar amounts?

Crazy price, even if the man on the moon bought it.

Not that I'd be complaining if I were the seller!! Smile

I'm afraid to destroy the opinion about mad Russians, but same Czech collector bought Blackburn for 2737 pounds. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINT.....&rt=nc

not wishing to sound cynical in anyway but once you own an original you can start to reproduce them. Some East European sellers manage to locate very rare Man Utd badges in their part of the world[that have never shown up on these shores] and they end up on ebay and some collectors have bought them for a few hundred quid, the next month a different seller has the same badge but its either larger or smaller but the fact is the design is the same but it is not right and it will kid some people for sure. Now I am not saying ALL badge buyers from that neck of the world are all rogues-of course not BUT a few are! Laughing
I have considered the odd item in the past from that neck of the woods and sought expert advice as I was unsure-so if you are not sure it is just like considering to get married but a couple of things bug you like your intended pickers her feet or her nose and u are not happy with this despite her having a size 10 figure legs up to her armpits a face of an angel knockers to die for and long blond hair-tell her to Pxxx Off and go and spend more time playin with yer badges and programmes! Laughing

Interesting thoughts Leslie. Well I can understand crooks trying to copy Manchester United badges , but with respect, Blackburn Rovers ? They would have to produce and sell a hell of a lot of badges to recoup their outlay. I think people would become suspicious once two or three turned up never mind forty to fifty.
Having said that, as others have pointed out. A Czech and Russian collector paying a fortune for Division 4 clubs badges. Quite bizarre.

But that's the point, most collectors cannot afford to pay such crackpot prices but it is no different to selling a copy of the re-printed Red Star Belgrade away v United for £5 when the original changes hands for North of £2k at auctions and ebay, so re-producing an original design and offering for a paltry 3-4 quid will offset the cost over time.
I know of one dealer who bought at auction a Pre-WW1 Cup Final programme that was played on a provincial ground then sold it to a collector of that club but only if he can have the rights to re-print and sell it.
I also wonder how these Czech sellers seem to get all these "old" original badges in great nick!, old being 1960/1970's and a never ending supply either-some have no name on the back and some do BUT look how easy it is to buy a clubs badge for a few quid then get 50 or so made and punt them out over several years knowing they cost 50-60p the pounds certainly add up!
personally I will not buy an enamel badge that does not have some name of the maker or markings, as nowadays the market is teeming with dross produced in the Far East[even though many PL clubs are having theirs made there too I suspect] but I am talking about off the net and being sold by individuals not the club's themselves.
interesting debate but a copy is a copy and no more than that, it fills a gap and I certainly have re-prints in my collection as well as the originals and if I do not have the original I am not going to "pooh-pooh" a reprint. I asked only a few days ago a very well known collector on this forum to send me a scan of a very old and rare and expensive programme-I owned it once before but had to let it go many years ago so I was delighted to receive it and told him so only yesterday!, it will sit with all my other items and one day I hope to get the chance to obtain an original once again. Night'all
