Here is the final line-up of dealers for this Sunday's Giant New Year Programme Fair.

The Royal National Hotel is officially in Woburn Place, but is opposite Russell Square Station. Plenty of free parking and just a few minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road and London's west end shops.

*ALAN BENEDICK *BC BOOK & MAGAZINE STALL*COLIN BOULTER *JOHN DEE * RICHARD COHEN * DGS PROGRAMMES* BARRY DIXEY* ELMO BOOKS* FOOTBALLPROGRAMMES.COM *IAN HANDS *MICHAEL HEWITT PROGRAMMES *DAVID JOHNSON * TOM ROE *PROGRAMME MONTHLY *BILL PRIDDY *MARTIN SILVERMAN *SOUTHERNPROGS *SOUTH STAFFS PROGRAMMES *SPORTINGOLD *SPURS COLLECTIBLES *TERRY'S BADGES *WESTWARD PROGRAMMES

If you have any special requests, then all of the dealers will be happy to bring programmes along if they are listed on respective websites. Do let me know if you need anyone's contact details. The Fair is also very good if you collect tickets, badges, books, or magazines.

Also, please feel free to bring your spares. If you want to sell any particularly rare items then it will be a good opportunity to see Chris Williams to discuss entering them in an upcoming Sportingold Auction.

We all look forward to seeing you there on Sunday.

regards and a Happy New Year

Martin

Had a cracking couple of hours at today's fair. Ian Hands had some good Watford stuff at very reasonable prices. Managed to pick up a Lincoln away 60/61 that I've needed for £1! Bargain. Was worth going just for that.

Hope it was worth it for the dealers.

Looking forward to the one in June already!

Good Fair from a personal view the attendance was lower due to the Sunday cup matches. Did some great exchanges and deals and i love to hear the Londoners moaning about the cost of living.
Bluenose you should have made the journey one of the cockerknee dealers had most Everton homes from 1946 to 1955 for sale.

It's a great fair, like most are. I can't help thinking there must be a way to get professional clubs, schools, youth football clubs... etc involved and aware of fairs in order to spread the word the hobby exists - maybe that'll be the key to ensure dealers have a wide clientele in 10-20 years' time!

The future of the hobby has been discussed on here a few times; most recently when a teacher was trying to set up a Football Memorabilia Club at his school and in a couple of attempts got no interest from the pupils. Sad but true.

I am sure that there will always be collectors but will there be sufficient numbers in 10/20 years time? I does not look like it.

Teenagers have moved on from what we found interesting and got excited about at their age.

As to the answer I am struggling to come up with anything viable.

Isn't it like everything? Little or no obvious new initiatives, little or no success?

For instance, I've always wondered whether the tens of thousands of post 1970s programmes held by some people could be put to use together with the respective clubs, e.g. gifting a free 1, 2 or 3 programmes to all under 16s entering a match at the turnstiles or when they join the club's junior fan club. Most dealers seem to despair of having to store so many of these 'worthless' programmes anyway and the interest created in some youngsters (not all, granted) may lead to creating new collectors and, in time, more sales of the club's current season programmes.

I'm not sure what efforts dealers make to stimulate the hobby amongst the general football-loving public, but it would be nice to hear of, if not help with, some. Insularity and lack of direction will surely further marginalise the hobby, but positivity, openness and pro-action might just boost it.

I’ve always had the opinion that there needs to be a “showpiece” programme fair/event every year. Now most will say well this is it, which in many respects it is (and/or the summer event), but it’s a long way from Scotland and the north and as such, the interest for Scottish/Northern England based dealers/collectors is reduced.

I think there’s a strong case for a more central location (Manchester?) and branching the fair out into a Sports Memorabilia fair covering a weekend in the off season. I’m sure there’s more than a few rugby union/league collectors/dealers, cricket, speedway, ice hockey etc etc. Signing sessions with former players could be introduced, the success for the Backpass magazine shows there is interest out there in more than just programmes. An auction could be included in the weekends proceedings.

Easy to say, much harder to do of course but I think that is where we need to be headed if we want fairs to survive in some form. They are all but dead in Scotland.
