Have picked up a few programmes from Brdigwater Town, that were advertised as early 1960's. They're all single sheet affairs, first team and reserves, but upon looking through them I notice an Atyeo at centre forward and wondered whether it may have been John Atyeo who retired from Bristol City in 1966 and the programmes are later than originally advertised?

Having been onto his Wikipedia site I see that he went teaching in Warminster after finishing playing football, which is only about 40 miles away from Bridgwater. Can't find anything about him playing for Bridgwater on it though. Can anyone please advise if this was John or not?

I will ask my C**y mates when I get home.
Hopefully they will be able to help.
Cheers, Jamie.

can't help with the query but the name sends shivers down the spine of any Irish football fan. Well before I was born but my father was on the terraces that day.

1-0 up v England at Dalymount Park and guaranteed at least a playoff for a place in Sweden as the game entered the final minute the big west countryman broke a nations hearts with his equaliser.

Yes, that last minute goal took England to the 1958 WC finals - also Johns last game for England.

Going back to the Bridgwater connection, John finished playing for Bristol City at the end of the 65/66 season aged 34.

He continued to be involved with the club and had a column in the programme until the end of the 67/68 season. So during this period he certainly would not have been involved playing for Bridgwater.

He was struggling to finish games at the end of his career, but did he play for Bridgwater later - I wouldn't have thought so.

regards, Mark

Cheers folk. Have noticed there's another Atyeo playing for Bridgwater now, having googled them. Is Atyeo a not uncommon west country name, or is this Atyeo possibly a descendant of John?

Have had the reply below from a Rovers mate of mine who playes bowls with Pete McCall, a team mate of John Atyeo.
Cheers, Jamie.

I checked with Pete McCall. He is certain that john Ateyo never played for any local sides after leaving trashton. He retired and became a schoolteacher. That view was confirmed by other long standing reds at the bowls club. Hope that helps.

There's a 2 page spread on Atyeo in the June 66 issue of Football Monthly. Penned by David Foot.

In it, he states that "I have decided on a complete break with the professional game. I shall try to keep in touch by passing on hints to schoolboys"

Having re-read the article, it does 'feel' like he doesn't intend to play any further competitive football. "Going out at the top" as he puts it.

That seems about right, John came to our school (Henbury, Bristol) about 1969, when I was 16 and took one of our training sessions. I think he qualified in maths and PE as a school teacher.
