Can anyone recommend a supplier for the paper back/clear front type of storage bag? And does anyone have any opinions on their suitability compared to the polypropylene type sold by some comic retailers? How many of you use backing boards, practically essential among comic collectors, or is that considered an unnecessary expense? What about acid-free storage bags etc? I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this. |

I think what you are looking for are called "film front bags".
I use them with the item in when sending through the post with no problems. E Bay has a load of suppliers of different sizes, quantities and price.
As for storage other members may have other suggestions.
Hope this helps, M |

I sell 2 types of bag at www.programmebinders.co.uk
CLEAR FRONT BAGS - These bags have a clear polypropylene film front and a white acid-free kraft paper back.
Available in 2 sizes - 7" x 10" and 10" x 12"
CLEAR BAGS - Made from ultra clear, acid free virgin polypropylene.
Available in 1 size, 7" x 10.5" with a 40mm (2") flap, with or without a re-sealable adhesive strip.
Other sizes can be supplied if needed. |

I've used this company for many, many years and never found anyone able to beat their prices anywhere. Their service is excellent. I've just purchased a couple of boxes of 7x10 and rather than drive to Basingstoke to pick them up, had them delivered and the total cost including VAT was £46.46

I use archival poyester pockets for more valuable items. They are inert, come in all sizes and are completely transparent. I ordered from a company called Conservation By Design who were less expensive than other suppliers. |

Some where amongst the archives on here there was quite a lengthy debate about the pros and cons of using certain types of bags. It was in the early days of the site and quite extensive.
I use the polypropolene bags with backing boards and have done for a good number of years now. Although it works out at about 15 pence per programme to do it keeps them in superb acid free condition.
It's important for me as a dealer to have my stock looking good at fairs, and these certainly do that. It keeps them in pristine condition and they don't get dog eared or bent either. Can't recommend them enough. |

On this subject, Ive had my programmes in clear faced bags for years with no problems but Im interested to know, and maybe 'Auchinleckian' can answer this, where can you get the backing boards from, or more to the point, any recommendations? Do they come in different sizes or is it a case of cutting to fit the bag? Just curious at the moment.
Thank

I started to use a backing card for the older programmes that I have and put this in a sleeve about 10 years ago now. I get the card from almost "Anywhere". You only need look at the card that you throw away yourself, from cereal packets to tissue boxes or shoe boxes. If you prefer to have the card to be clear on both sides all you need do is just use some pritstick or other type of glue to join 2 thin cards together with the coulerd side inwards. You will be surprised at the amount of card that you throw away ( having said that dont you already put card and paper in a re-cycle bin / bag in your town ? )
As already said it keeps programmes in good condition and stop fraying and dog eared corners, which unforetunately most of the older programmes already have |

Check out comic shops on line. Don't know of any specifically, but there's definitely one in Glasgow. |
