Hi there, i am new to this site.

Have a 1922 fa cup final programme in quite bad condition it has 4 pieces missing from front cover, some tears, and folds.

I have recently sent it away to programme preservation to be restored, the price quoted £125.

Is that worth it?

Andy,

I wonder how much it could be worth if restored really well.

Your problem could be with the provenance that it has obviously been repaired, as there are very serious collectors who don't touch such programmes with the proverbial barge pole. That said, I still think you'd get a healthy return on it.

Thanks for the comment,

I bought from a man from huddersfield who has had it for 20 years.

I will upload some pics when I get it back.

I am planning putting it to sotherby's in May 2013 but if prices do not pick up i dont think I will.

So you paid £450 on a programme you know nothing about ?

I wish there were more collectors like you,

Or was it £4.50... Confused

I'm not so sure in today's market. As John says, a lot of collectors will not touch them. Some go crazy over the smallest repair if you don't tell them. I'd guess you would have to sell for £800 min to make any sort of decent profit. Personally i would have it restored for my collection but not to sell on.

I agree with all of the above. At £600 I can still see some profit but question whether you would get just as good a return without restoring? Hard to tell without seeing a scan[/b]

Check Sotherby's commission rates and other costs before committing yourself.

There are other good specialist sporting memorabilia auction houses e..g Sportingold, Sporting Memorys etc. They sell valuable items. If it was me I would speak to them all for a chat regarding potential value when restored, selling costs and reserve. Then you can make a comparison / decision.

Hope this helps, Martin

i once paid about £100 for a Grimsby v Wolves semi final at Old Trafford, It was shot to bits, spine all torn . I had it restored and it was magnificent.
I put it on eaby, and got less than £100 for it. Crazy, i said it has been restored and that was that, rubbish bids. I wish i know kept it in my collection as restoration does not bother me. One of my biggest mistakes i'm afraid.

Well i think the restoration will add some value and add life to the programme as well, and i may keep it. Having done some research the programme in question has sold for a good price in previous years but the market is not great at the moment. I have listed some prices and dates below from my research.

2011 - £1600 - £1800 - Mullocks

2010 – VG - £3800 – Sotherby's

2012 – VG - £3900 – sportpages

2010 – G Restored - £1600 – Bonhams

2007 – G - £2200 – Sotherbys

2007 – G - £2700 – Sotherbys

2010 – G - £1600 – sotherby's

2010 – VG - £3800 - sotherby's

Who knows what i could get on a good day if the market is good and two people really want it, it just depends on the day.

Thanks for all the opinions and input much appreciated.
