Auctions started taking the pice long before they started listing rubbish at exorbitant prices. IMO it started when they introduced buyers' premiums so they got paid twice for selling the same thing! Now we are stuck with it. Apparently Income Tax was only introduced to fund the Napoleonic Wars at 6 old pence (2 and a half in new money) in the pound and there were riots in the streets like in Greece recently.

I had some items in the FSA auction yesterday. Surprised by some of the lots prices (mainly non footballing items) which have helped in funding footballing purchases from the same sale, but other lots fetched fairly dire prices, but that's the way of the world at the moment. I've no gripes about it, had plenty of decent lots at auction over the years so there's no gripes when something doesn't do as well as originally thought. If that was the case you'd never get a bargain.

You have to realise that the majority of auction houses are staffed by people with little love of football and even less knowledge of football memorabilia.

The person valuing this has obviously seen something that is 60 years old, involves Manchester United playing a team he has never heard of and being played at Arsenal too !!!!!

The brain starts working overtime, he is blind to the damage to the item, and, hey-ho, lets slap an estimate of £60-£80 as I don't want to appear a dimwit by having too low an estimate !!

Then he thinks to himself if he should put it into the 'sporting, shooting & fishing' category which this particular auction appears to have.

However, in a further show of defiance, he decides to have it in the 'porcelain & chattels' section of the catalogue as he can see the old biddies drooling over this rare publication in between viewing their Wade Whimsies and Clarice Cliff art deco dildoes !!!!!
