Just wondering if anybody knows anything about this competition i.e who participated in it, what years it was active/is it still going today.

Any help will be much appreciated Smile

Man Utd participated every season from 46/47 - 54/55 inclusive.

Utd played Macclesfield home and away in 53/54, 17th March at home, and a programme does exist, at Macclesfield date unknown.

That info is from the Ultimately United book.

Thanks for that - I presume this is a reserve team competition?

I believe we made the final in 1947-48 and a programme was issued for that like the majority of other reserve team games in the 1940s. However I have never seen a reserve home programme from the 50s but that does not mean they would not have produced one.

Any idea of the teams that participated in it? Is it a Northwest thing or more specific than that?

Utd played against Atherton Colliery, Man City, Altrincham, Newton Heath, Stalybridge, Droylsden, Hyde Utd, Leek Town, New Mills, Taylor Brothers, Ashton Utd, Hazel Grove, Mirrlees, Macclesfield, Stockport, Bury and Prescot Cables.

Pretty select group of teams from the North West, I think.

You can find the programme from Manchester United "A" v Macclesfield Town reserves in the Gylgryst Cup played at The Cliff on 3/3/1954 on my flickr page.
This was one of the earliest games to be played under floodlights and was in fact used to test the floodlights.
This game was abandoned at half time and played again on 17/3/1954.
It can be located in the set marked "At the Cliff"
Enjoy

Cheers Ray, very interesting programme that and one I hope to own one day. Can't imagine there are many of them about and it is well out of my price range at the moment as I'm only 17 so thanks for sharing it on your site. Thumbs Up

very happy to be able to help.
it will cost you about £500/£600 if it appeared commercially but you never know who you might bump into in Macclesfield that might have been to the game or played in it.
That's the exciting part of the hobby isn't it.
The hope that somebody might help you

Yes you're right there and thats what I love about the hobby as you just don't know what's round the corner. I consider myself quite a serious collector as I've got a few thousand Macc programmes now with a number of pre-war and 1940s programmes so hopefully in a few years time I will be able to afford a few items like that.

I have a mate who has an impressive Man Utd collection and hes only 18, the youth are out there!

Got to do our best to help them along aswell, I've sorted him out with a few programmes and stuff on many occasions, and only too glad to help as its good to see the younger generations having a hobby.

That said I'm only double his age, not an old fart like some on here Wink
