One of the subjects that has been lamented in the past on the forum is the demise of many of the saturday evening sports newspapers. I used to deliver papers on saturday's and by the time I got back to the newsagents (used to stop of at my house to hear the scores) there were already queues of blokes waiting for 'The 'Green Un'.

Must say we still have ours, but like other things it's a pale imitation of what it was. Looking through an old edition tonight, 16th February 1963, there wasn't too many games played due to the big freeze (11 in total), it's interesting to see how social attitudes have changed.

In amongst, reports such as United losing again, an 18 year old keeper having a sparkling debut for Grimsby against middlesbrough, the choice of 57 cinemas's, South Pacific, or Cliff in The Young Ones, The Longest Day, or La Cucaracha at Studio 7 (Nudge Nudge, wink wink, you know what I mean). Then there was coverage of every local sporting event taking place in yorkshire.

And there was this advert for a shocking article shortly to appear in the Sheffield Telegraph.

Interesting to read that this was considered a social problem.
Women working ......a disgrace,..... only surprised Richard Keys didn't write it.

Does anybody else collect the old saturday sports editions, or is it just me, sad git as I am, who needs to get out more.

Yes i collect/ed these, i have a vast collection of Sporting Star Football Pink (Wolverhampton) from when i was a regular visitor to Molineux 67 to 75, thay realy are still a great read and bring back some great memories following a realy good Wolves side this era.
For some reason i always seam to get these out over Christmas time ,has come a bit of a tradition in our household ,when the grandchildren have made there way home after Christmas dinner its out with the S/S F/P infront of a rawring fire with a couple of brandies for some reading.
These are not cheap either and can sell for anything between £10 & £15 at the moment....arnt i glad i kept all mine.

The saturday evening paper was such a part and parcel of my young life....brings nostalgic tears to my eyes Used to go down the newsagent and wait for the van then read it on the walk home knowing that when I got in my dad would pull rank and have first read in the house. Sadly the saturday evening paper in london disappeared a long time ago. I have a few from 1970 and 71 and they are fascinating. In those days without the web they were the first source of local match reports on a saturday evening. Once the videprinter and Grandstand had done their job and a few minutes of Sports Report on Radio 2 then the early evening was about the saturday newspaper where you could look at the results and tables at your leisure. I noticed a vast change in the way football is reported in just the last few years. You things like interviews with players and managers are just mostly "brand dribble" now as if they are all given a script and they can't use any words not on that script.

Only yesterday I was sorting some shoot mags, now this mag is not renowned for cutting edge reporting and in-depth interviews but reading the first Bryan Robson Column I was shocked at some of the things he was saying with regard to Albion not accepting a £1.5 million bid for me. He was also quite frank about the England team. At the time these would be part and parcel of the game but now I suspect he would be fined by both the club and the FA.

It's just another form of basic honesty we've lost from the game I suspect.

If you, like me, lament the passing of such things as Saturday night sports papers, league ladders, and such like, treat yourself to a copy of the book called 'Got, Not Got' if you haven't already done so.

Pure nostalgia, and arguably the best footy book ever.

Saturday Night sports papers are lamented in there too.
