Abandoned games

Hi

Bradford City v Palace 24.10.98 - match abandoned after 45 minutes - waterlogged pitch. Score 1-1 at half time (Morrison for Palace, gate 15,157). It was rearranged for 19.1.1999 and City won 2-1 (Tuttle for Palace - gate 14,368).

Coventry v Palace 20.3.2004 - on that day Palace played at home to Norwich so I'm thinking for some reason Coventry couldn't fulfil that fixture on that date or it got rearranged as we played them away on Sunday 9th May. So definitely not abandoned but maybe postponed sufficiently early that the Norwich game could be fixed up. I really don't know I'm afraid.

Howard cannot access this site and has asked me to post the following on his behalf.

The Grimsby v Chesterfield match was on the date shown and was abandoned at half time due to torrential rain and waterlogged pitch. There is a report in the Newspaper Archive and the Sky is Blue (the Chesterfield Archive )confirms this.
The Coventry v Sheffield Weds match was on the 19th November and was abandoned after 63 mins due to fog and darkness. Report in various Sunday Papers.

Fulham v N Forest 14 dec 1946 abandoned due to fog.

I can't see Middlesbrough v Barnsley on 2 January 1995 on any of the lists. This was abandoned at half-time with the score 2-1, officially due to a frozen pitch. It was finally played on 14 March that year ending in a 1-1 draw.

Perhaps I could also add that I think this is a valuable piece of work as these are events that actually did take place, albeit truncated, and it's a shame that they are, effectively, removed from the record books.

On a similar theme, it's also a shame that the records of teams that fail to complete a season are 'expunged'. You won't find my only visit to Edgar Street in Hereford recorded anywhere because it was a a game against Aldershot in the season they didn't complete. So, even though I saw the game, it didn't officially take place!

Two more to add to the list which now stands at 440 abandoned games covering the FA Cup, League Cup and the leagues top 4 tiers back to the start of time! I'm sure there are so many more to add yet but it's a slow process. I agree that it is a shame they are not recorded as games played although many of them were abandoned in the dying minutes of games...all that effort for there to be no record kept.

04.02.1978 Orient v Charlton Athletic A-A 2nd Division

To expand this slightly, this was abandoned at HT when it was 0-0, due to a waterlogged pitch. My very first game of football!
