Had one of those questioning moments yesterday at a funeral, where I wondered who on earth would know what to do with my programmes, books, etc, as and when I shuttle off this mortal plane? It really did bring it home to me, how difficult an exercise it might be, and so having given up trading earlier this year I've decided to downsize considerably in the next few months.

All I'm keeping out of my stock will be my pre 1950 English League and Cup; pre 1960's English non league and non league vs League in the FAC; pre 1960's Scottish league and cup, plus a number of post 1960's items, ie Celtic Lisbon Lions 1966-7 season; friendlies between league and non league and reserves pre 1970, and a few other bits and bobs. The rest will be going, and then I'll systematically list the whole lot over a period of time and identify how to sell when needed.

There's probably 350 odd English pre 1960's league and cup to go, 60's Scottish, and 60's English northern non league mainly and also in the FACup proper; friendlies, first and last etc etc. The only post 1970 items I'll be keeping are my 1970-1 BPA homes. There's most FAC finals 1958 to date; similarly there's big match from across the spectrum and others to go.

My intention is, not to give up, but to become a collector again of sorts, albeit this time I'll be buying purely with an eye to the future, and reinvesting any money I make on the sales on higher tariff programmes.

If anybody would like to purchase in bulk, about 1500 of the previously mentioned acidic free bags and backing boards that they were previously housed in let me know. They work out at circa £15 per hundred with bags and backing boards, but I'll do them at £6 per hundred, although I'd rather do them in bulk. They will have prices on them with sticky labels but these peel off - I'm not doing it! Only stipulation is that you arrange the courier etc, they'll be too heavy to post.

Am away on holiday for a week soon, so if anybody's interested in anything please pm me and I'll contact you when I get back.

John

Hi Steve, nto going anywhere bar southern Spain shortly! Sincerely hope that come March 28th next year amd still around as I get the bus pass then, and the world - or the darker secrets of Scotland - is my oyster.

It just seemed logical, and sensible, to make some kind off arrangements, and it basically boils down to this. If there's X amount of programmes in my collection when I'm brown bread, and they're all likely to be worth £10 or more each, it's a damn sight easier than for someone with no knowledge of programme tariffs to try and discern which are the valuable ones.

I really enjoy picking up the genuine bargains on ebay, and will continue to do so - probably with more vigour than before - but as mentioned, it's with an eye to the future.

Funerals do have the capacity to bring it on home to you though about what you actually value in life, and my trading days are gone so it's not making money. I still love football, especially the older non league game both north and south of the border, and that's where my new collecting interests will lie.

Plus ca change, really, just downsizing and mellowing......

My missus says she will take great pleasure in burning my programmes if I snuff it first. There are no pockets in a shroud!

It's interesting that you say this as I've started to prepare for my demise by telling my wife of the people who I trust to dispose of my "rubbish" as she'd call it.
I've loved my collection over all these years and so I've instructed a couple of mates to supervise the disposal so that my wife and kids can have a great holiday with the proceeds so that I enjoy my collection when I'm alive and they will enjoy it in my death. It's a win, win.

This week the goverment wasted a stamp telling me I could not retire till I was 66 years old. I got the impression as I get closer to that number they edge it up and up till I'm unable to work. Perhaps losing my tax will put a strain on the delicate economy Smile

Anyone who doesn't know who to leave their collection to can glady name me in their will. I'll do my best to pass them on to other collectors Smile

Fact is the current expected life term in the UK is 79 years for men and 82 years for women. I suspect we lose 3 years waiting for them Smile
