The stadia to be used for the 1966 World Cup were, obviously, decided well in advance of the tournament itself.

But - which two grounds were held "in reserve" in case anything untoward happened to the original choices?

The answer is quite surprising.....

A complete guess at Plymouth and Ipswich.

I'll go for an even crazier answer...Hampden Park and Cardiff?!

Although I have just read this about why White City hosted one game - White City Stadium in London was used for a single game from Group 1, between Uruguay and France. The game was scheduled for a Friday, the same day as regularly scheduled greyhound racing at Wembley. Because Wembley's owner refused to cancel this, the game had to be moved to the alternative venue.

Some good guesses there - but none of them right as yet.

Not quite "in reserve", but originally chosen were Arsenal (rejected because the pitch was too long) and Newcastle (unable to obtain satisfactory lease from the town council).

Assume they would have needed to be near major rail networks, and in the areas already chosen? On that basis I'll plump for the Valley and the Hawthorns.

You're getting warm with The Hawthorns.
Neither ground is in London, by the way

Looks like I'm going to have to give a clue or two here Smile

Hint 1 - both clubs have the colour red in their jerseys

Hint 2 - when the decision was made, neither club were in the first division (though one very nearly was!)
