Just read about the rise Royal Mail postal rates from 30th April. Scandalous increases to 60p and 50p for 1st and second class.

Well it's either that or the Royal Mail won't exist in a few years. It's been haemorraging money for a while. |

In all seriousness, can anyone say it is Scandalous ?
Scandalous, are you kidding. try and buy a football programme on Ebay for 60p. You might get a 1970 Manchester United v Stoke City creased, punch holed, team changes , if you are lucky.
Go in a cafe and get a cup of tea for 60p, no chance.
Buy a Mars bar and see what change you have left.
But you can post a programme in St Ives at tea time and it could be in Glasgow the next day. Ask you local courier how much it will cost. Scandalous??? come on, give us a break. |

Wullie, it is meant to be a nationalized service.
Leave your free market capitalist logic at the door. |

I think it's fair to say that 60p isn't a lot of money, but it's the scale of the rise that's infuriating.
I heard on the radio coming home from work that an economist was predicting only three deliveries a week in 10 years time and none at all in 15, once the Royal Mail is fully privatised. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |

very logical, a private delivery company that needs to make money, by not delivering anything. mmmm good business sense, i see his point. |

Come on Wullie, nationalized services are run to facilitate a need not run for profit. |

How many times a year do you do the above? The impact on businesses who rely on the Royal Mail will be huge and the costs passed back to us, the consumer so there will less left in your pocket of a cup of tea and Mars Bar!! |

A rather naive way of looking at things nowadays, unfortunately. The price hikes are basically to cover ongoing pension costs (the final salary one that Wullie will enjoy, and I also enjoy as an early retiree) making it a rather more attractive proposition for one of Cameron's Eton chum's to privatise some way down the line. Remember Parcel Force etc?
It will be sold off on the basis of "better choice for the consumer" If anybody's stupid enough to believe that, google previous privatisations if you're not old enough to remember them.....Gas, Electric, British Rail, etc, etc, etc. It's all about feeding the vultures in the City and bollocks to the poor old customer.
Ps. Don't think for one moment that Labour would do any better.... |

Royal Mail took a holiday from paying into the pension scheme for years then the govt panicked when it realised the shortfall deficit was unattractive to potential buyers - privatisation - for the last few years they've increased prices by changing the way mail is costed , like size , slashed the workforce , made postmans rounds larger , cut payments for extras like leaflets (households) , got rid of the second delivery , deliver mail later , brought in one way flexibility so postmen find it near impossible to claim overtime , awarded massive bonuses to managers who have achieved cost reduction targets/savings , changed the name to Consignia then reverted back to Royal Mail wasting millions and employed Adam Crozier whio almost caused a players strike when at the FA !._________________ http://www.sportsattax.net/ Paypal accepted No Pies - Ticket stubs added daily |

There'll be email and private/recorded/special delivery items only in a generation. And junk mail. |

At least we've had fair warning. I've bought loads with "1st" and "2nd" on them, just to ease the transition. |

I've noticed they have stopped franking a lot of the stamps, last months Programme Monthly came with two unfranked first class stamps.I wouldn't have dreamed of recycling a few years ago but different now.
Also at least one of the prices is being dropped... second class small parcels ie books or a bundle of progs are going down from the current £2.61 to £2.20
I think putting up the price of a second class stamp to as much as 50p will significantly reduce the amount of post they get.Although in the very short term sales of the 36p stamps will be very good.I bought 48 testerday. |
