I spent this Saturday in the company of Arthur and Roland, two contributors to this forum who I have had fairly regular contact with. As I was going to watch Grimsby this weekend at Stockport I'd arranged to meet up with the guys to have a "wee swally" pre and post match, and to watch the game together.
We all turned up on time - albeit I was waiting outside the pub to open for 15 minutes. Said pub was the magnet in Stockport, a veritable real ale lover's paradise, and I was like a pig in the proverbial! We found we were all of a similar mind in terms of where our football allegiances lay....all disillusioned with the modern league game, and preferring the more local non league type games. We all shared a similar love of real ale, and having had three great pints we went onto the Crown, where they had 16 hand pumps - it was a cask ale orgasmatron, so much so that we managed two rather than one and ended up missing kick off. Collectively, our geriatric bladders didn't do too bad considering everything. Another couple of pints after the game capped a superb day, then an Italian with Arthur later on.
Fantastic day, and something we all seemed to agree we should do again. Might see about something before the end of the season guys? If there's any other geriatric real ale lovers out there.....

As one of the co-conspiritors all I can say is that we were led astray by said John H. Arthur and I were quite happy to drink lemonade but the erstwhile Grimsby afficiando would have none of it! He threatened to take my Aldershot v Third Lanark friendly programme unless I forced strong drink down my throat! What he did to Arthur to force him to consume the devils drink cannot be described and is best not dwelt upon!

In all seriousness it was wonderful to meet two really great chaps and I am looking forward to our next thrash! Any folk who know me and find themselves in Cheshire or surrounding counties get in contact and we can talk programmes, football, music etc - oh and sink some amber nectar

I just wish to say that I wish to be disassociated from a southern softie shandy drinker's remarks about force feeding him alcohol. He came with an ABV stamped on his forehead....

Being the third co conspirator on Saturday - none of these two had to be forced to consume what can only be described as the finest ale as you can get anywhere.

Magnificent pubs and great company.

Pity about the result for John but as Grimsby played the worst football I had seen since 1958 and under a alcoholic glaze it didn't look good.

John - trust you journeyed home in one piece?

If I'd watched that game without having a slight alcoholic befuddlement I'd have been pretty upset! Got home no problems......and it wasn't raining as I turned left of the M6 into Dumfries and Galloway, which made me think I could be hallucinating.

You'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that I turned down the wine list when we went for a meal. Last pint was consumed at about 5.45pm, due to the fact that I had to drive back the next day....actually had a glass of tap water with my meal! Was therefore tickety boo when driving home on Sunday.

...and it should have been "were" not "was" Nozzer!

Reminds me of an old joke...

Baby bear goes to see his dad" Father, am I a brown bear?"

"No, son, you're a polar bear"

Ten minutes later "Dad, am I a koala bear?"

"No, son, you're a polar bear"

Ten minutes later "Dam, am I a fruit eating bear?"

"No, son, you're a polar bear. Why do you keep asking?"

...."because I'm ****ing freezing!"

A good club that. Last time I was there was for the day before the Preston Fair this year. I got a B&B just past Garstang where they had 4 real ales on. Slap bang in the middle of nowhere and only £30 per night. Think it was a good night...
