Football Programme Storage & Advice

I have been trying to gain advice from various sources over whether it is better to store Football Programmes in flat piles or filed upright? Or whether it makes any difference? I'm still none the wiser.

Over the years a lot of my programmes have developed a kind of coating almost scratchable, a little difficult to describe, that I have been told is a form of damp and can happen over years if not stored properly.

I think I would prefer them upright to flick through opposed to being flat and more weight piled on top of one another.

Secondly, can anyone recommend where is best to obtain the acid free clear face bags for all sizes of programme?

My plan is to have all my programmes stored in the clear face bags, stored/filed standing upright and compactly within a sealed closed plastic storage box like the ones 'Really Useful Box' make.

Any advice or experience would be much appreciated.

An endless dilemma, unless your collection is all the same size, same weight, same era etc, then you have to try and find ways of accomodating various different types of programmes. The older the programme collection the better as these do tend not to be A4 glossy encyclopedia's that today's issues are. I started in binders, switched to ring binders with plastic pockets, and now use plastic pockets in really useful boxes, but this lock down has allowed me the time to go through some bits, and with heavier more modern items, the programmes tend to bow in the middle, if you stand them up the bottom edge curls, it really is a case of finding the best solution for each section, in my humble opinion.

I invested in some Secol "pockets" a few years ago - not cheap but they are the best quality and if you get 75 or 100 micron thickness they also help to support the programmes as well as keeping them in acid free storage

For some of my better items I use comic bags with backing boards. Works out at about £20 for 100. They protect the programmes and give support. They also look good. The down side is that the backing board adds a fair bit of weight.

I also use some nice binders that I had made by JW binders - not cheap, but worth it for nice programmes

For the more special programmes that I have, FA Cup Finals, Play-Off Finals etc I have them in A4 clear cellophane (acid free) bags with a custom piece of card backing in with them.

Carlisleprogs - Can you buy comic bags that come with card backing or do you have to put your own card in?

I am using very much the same as guess I am lucky my collection is 50s-mid 70s.
What I am know looking for is somthing g that will take full versions of Football Pinks and large press cuttings and match reports that is my main interest at the moment.... Has to be somthing out there.

I go on Amazon and search comic bags and backing boards. There are various sizes of bags with matching boards. It is worth paying an extra £1 for the resealable bags. They have a little tear off strip and once sealed can be opened easily and resealed. I use either current size and silver size

It’s usually about £7 for the bags and £10 or so for the matching boards. I have amazon prime so get free next day delivery. You will probably find similar on eBay

This is what I used to have many moons ago, but it is ok for the standard sized items, but even with the larger binders it is too expensive and today the programmes are much bigger and you are going to need tons of them.

I switched around 25 years ago to Secol acid free pages be it A4 with one pocket or A4 with 2 or even A4 with 4 for cards ect and then I found these hard backed colourful plastic binders at Staples when they had stores in the UK, it allowed you to fill them up to 3" thick which is way over the original binders that have no flexibility.

Staples still sell them on line as well as other types.

For me even though every programme is in a Secol page it has a Black board behind it[Acid Free or not-cheapest place in the UK is The Range] but more importantly the Secol "V" strip that can be cut up and it holds the programme or whatever it is you wish to use it for in place and it never moves.

Amazing collection and the way you store it. As a fellow United fan Im always in awe of it.

Most of my United programmes are in the official Revew binders. Im not in the league of all you guys, but I will get a photo uploaded to here.
