I have finally finished writing my second football book, but Coronavirus has taken its toll on the publishers that I used for my first one and I'm looking for suggestions for somebody to publish it for me.
With my first book, "Enjoy the Highs, Survive the Lows", the deal I had was with no upfront costs for myself and all of the publishers fees were taken from the commission earned on sales.
I'm looking for a company that do similar deals and I know there are several other published authors on this site and hope that you can point me in the right direction.
I know I could self publish, but I've spent the weekend looking into that and it looks like a minefield to me and I'd rather go with somebody that knows what they are doing.
Thanks in advance |

Paul, you could try these 2 - I've never published anything myself but the 2 books I refer to I would guess are the same sort of size & print run as yours, and came out last year. See what you can find here:-
1. Football's Black Pioneers (2020)
Conker Editions Ltd
www.conkereditions.co.uk
[email protected]
I could put you in touch with the authors of the above if that helps.
2. The Ruhleben Football Association (2020)
Goal Post Books
www.goalpostbooks.co.uk
I recommend both books, by the way!
Good luck with it |

Thanks for that Pete. Much appreciated.
Goal Post Books do not accept author submissions, but I have sent an e-mail to Conker Editions.
I'll let you know when I hear back from them. |

I went down the self-publishing route for my childrens' book. It was not without its difficulties, ISBN numbering and finding your printer etc, but not too onerous You end up with a pile of books and decide your retail price and have to sort out sales and the distribution.
If you are happy to take orders, or via adverts, and let someone else send them out and forward you your cut then Lulu (not the singer) could be a good shout. They have been going a while and others I know have used them and say good things. Particularly good for small volumes, often referred to as vanity publications!
Probably depends on how many you think you can sell. You know your sales of your first and how that went.
Good luck. |

Thanks slightfold
I've had a look at Lulu's website and it looks to be all about self publication and I'd prefer to avoid that if I can.
I'll keep looking at it though in case I've missed something obvious.
Appreciate the message.
Thank you. |

Just out of interest has anyone self produced a book?
I assume in many cases it is a vanity project with no financial rewards but what have been your experiences - both good and bad? |

Thanks to the suggestions so far from Pete and slightfold, but I'm still looking.
Two of the three suggestions are self publishing and the third (conker) have just got back to me and due to the pandemic are only able to publish two books this year.
Looks like it's going to be a tricky one for me, so please pile in if you have any more suggestions.
Thanks |

Randomly picking books off my bookshelf, and can see it's a bit of a minefield. You could try here but fear it's the self-publishing route again:-

I've had a book published with Legends Publishing. They specialise in football books. The owner - David Lane - is a Brentford fan but they have published books on Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Everton and Norwich as well.
He's a great bloke to work with.

Many moons ago I met and chatted with Randall Northam of Sportsbooks...
Nice bloke...I should have written the book ( and still might
Not sure if his model will suit because we never got that far but he seems to have some interesting football titles that might fit your style

Recent publications on Hendon FC are done by London league publications. . Here’s a link to their website which seems to be a site for selling the books they publish. no idea on the process of getting print services from then but maybe worth a try??

If you can't find a publisher and don't want to self-publish, then what about making it an ebook?
Try Paul Matz at programme monthly, he might have some publishing connections. |

Thanks Hendon - I've dropped them a message.
slightfold - Ideally I want it to come out like my first book, as a paperback and an ebook.
Paul Matz is a good shout. I'll contact him as he reviewed my first book and did a write up on it in Programme Monthly.
Huge thanks to everybody that has posted suggestions.
Great teamwork and very much appreciated.
Apologies to everybody else for clogging up the recent posts |
