One of the joys of living in France is turning up the occasional gem.

The following item is intriguing, as it came in an Edwardian photograph Album, with a label on the front “Coupe d’Angleterre”. (English Cup).

I am happy to identify the ground as Crystal Palace , venue of many English Finals. I have numerous other photos of the Ground.

My obvious question....who’s playing....any theories?

The photographs measure 4.25 x 2.5” and are stuck into the album.

I interpret it to mean Seat Numbers or Standing area?

It’s a far cry from today!

This was how ticketing and seating was organised - the ticket in the link above has a number quite close to those in the pictures

Sid,

Thanks for the link, this is a first time I have seen a ticket for Crystal Palace.

I note the link is referring to a season ticket. Was someone playing there regularly, or were other sports included?

I appreciate all of this is nothing to do with the team Crystal Palace Fc at Selhurst Park.

Do you think these photos are a Cup Final or another mere Cup Match?

So many strands here. Thanks for the contribution.

CPFC didn't move into Selhurst Park until 1924.

When first founded Palace played at Crystal Palace from 1905 until 1915 at which point it was requisitioned by the Admiralty.

Your photos don't give the impression of its being a Cup Final when it would be totally rammed. There's just a chance it could be Palace playing an FA Cup match - Palace home matches in that period were on:-

6.2.1907 v Fulham
23.2.07 v Brentford
9.3.07 v Everton

21.1.09 v Wolves
6.2.09 v Burnley

15.1.10 v Swindon

14.1.11 v Everton

17.1.12 v Brentford
3.2.12 v Sunderland

11.1.13 v Glossop
1.2.13 v Bury

10.1.14 v Norwich

If those dates appear anywhere in the book we could be in business!

The 7th photo (the one with the brass band) has in the background the tower which is part of the larger of the two 'Mountain Railway' rollercoasters which were installed for the Festival of Empire in 1911

They have scaffold around them, so it is likely in the process of being erected. I say erected because it was still standing it 1914 and then the War came.

Below is a recently colourised photo of the Crystal Palace ground hosting the 1914 Final. You can see the rollercoaster tower in the background, as well as people at the front holding signs advising the seat numbers for the front seats ('The Ring')

Thanks Dorking,

I had no idea what was going on behind the band.

It’s interesting to note the gaps in the crowd, due no doubt to the topography of land.

So we thinks it’s 1914 ish?

I think 1911 - the Festival of the Empire opened in May 1911, the FA Cup Final that year was 22 April 1911 - with the scaffolding around the tower that would seem logical

The crowd that year was 69,000 (some 40,000 fewer than 10 years previously for example). The more panoramic picture where the crowd looks quite sparse was maybe taken before the ground started to fill up

The rest of the album depicts tourist type shots of London, and the trip over the Channel. It was purchased from a vendor near Lille, so the person/s who pulled the album may have logically come over for the exhibition and took in the Football.

Great work all, I am learning fast...

Taken from Wikipedia which allows a better view here - it is the "Outdoor Spectacles" on the map

Is that where you live, near Lille? I’m in the process of moving over there, most likely within 100km of Limoges.

I know most countries aren’t big on collecting programmes, but what about memorabilia, is it collected in France? Are there many expats that still collect over there?

The is an open response targeted to the Forest Mick enquiry.

I have had a French connection for 15 years, but my experiences are up in the North of the Country ( Pas de Calais). I am 40 minutes from the Eurotunnel.

So my experience primarily relates to this region but not exclusively.

Firstly, I have never found anything that you would all recognise as a Football related Fair. The do have what is known as a “ Bourse Multicollection” which is what you will know as a collectors fair. The French are very keen on Postcards, and Stamps, so wider ephemera does sometimes appear.

Out of say 20 traders, at a Fair, maybe 3 or 4 may have something to search. So you travel more in hope than expectation.

I know the environs of Limoges can be a bit remote, so I wouldn’t have high hopes.

I would recommend, if you visited good Newsagent/ Bookshop and ask for the Braderie/ Brocante Agenda 2020, they will have a comprehensive set of dates for Flea Markets, Car Boot Sales etc in your area. ( well I suspect they will)

These events can through up items such as Panini Sticker Albums . I bought a good condition WC1974 edition which I sold to Russia for a very healthy sum.

They also have a lot of Pin Badges featuring all clubs at all levels. I also pick them up, and spend winter evenings working out who they are.

On the Belgian border, I picked up a small collection of around 25 or so, Cigarette Cards wrapped up by a rubber band in an old biscuit tin. I quickly clocked that they were Taddy, in Fair to average condition.Price 2 Euros for a job lot. I figure they were probably left by some poor soul sent out during WW1.

The 15 or so, Prominent Footballers ( London Mixture) we’re so repatriated with the UK collecting fraternity.

So occasional finds, but if you treat it like a morning out, find a good place for lunch with your loved one, then what’s not to like.

Ahhh.....early retirement...it’s all the rage..

Vive la difference!

Thanks for the info, good to know! Just wanted to know what to bring over and what to leave in the U.K.
Yes it’s very rural round there, peace and quiet by the bucket full for me! Thumbs Up

Great thread chaps with some great info.

Whilst I don't live in France whenever I go over I always take in as many Brocantes as possible. You never know what you are going to find.

Some of the old magazines had some coverage of English Football in text and sometimes a small photo.

You never know what you are going to find!
