Ian Ross RIP

At the age of 72, the former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Peterborough centre back Ian Ross has passed away.

Signed by Bill Shankly when just 16, he made nearly 70 appearances for Liverpool over 10 years, never really establishing himself and then joined Villa for whom he turned out in over 175 games, often as captain, including in the 1975 League Cup final win over Norwich. Following loans to Notts County and Northampton he then had 3 years at Peterborough with over 100 games there, and also played 15 times while player coach at Hereford.

Turning to coaching he went overseas to Iceland (Valur) and Keflavik (Norway) before returning to his native Scotland in 1996 to manage Berwick Rangers but that only lasted 6 months.

His finest hour came in a Fairs Cup game away at Munich in 1971. He man marked Beckenbauer out of the game AND scored Liverpool's goal that night in a 1-1 draw.
