Hi everyone,

I am after team photos of London teams pre-1900.

I don't want to use /re-produce them, but I am trying to find which is the oldest one.

Thanks everyone,

Davis

The oldest is probably Forest Football Club c1863. Gives me a chance to plug my history of The Forest Foot-Ball Club published by the Leyton & Leytonstone Historical society - see their website.

Also Colm Kerrigan included two of Harrow Green School, Leytonstone taken in 1894 and 1896, in his The early Years of the Leyton Schools' Football Association. Also available from L&LHS.

Colm also has one of Millwall Rovers 1889 and Thames Ironworks 1896 in his East London: A Hotbed of Football.

Julian Holland produced a couple of Tottenham Hotspur dated 1884 and 1893. Must be loads of school ones, many not published. Might make an interesting book of London Football Teams. I have a number of unpublished ones that deserve seeing the light of day.

The earliest I can do is from 1897/8, Croydon Common - the first known photograph of this club.

This is from the superb book from about 1990 - "Who Killed the Cock Robins?" by Alan Futter.

Here is Harrow Footers from 1871

Taken from "To The Palace for the Cup", a truly superb tome, by Ian Bevan, Stuart Hibberd & Michael Gilbert 1999

Thanks to you both for your replies.

An Orient one has just come to the surface from 1898 - looks like it is nearly the oldest London professional club team photo!!

The oldest known Brentford picture is from 1892/1893, when the Club won the West London Alliance.

Woolwich Arsenal, there are known pictures from 1888/1889 and 1890/1891.

Spurs, there's a picture from 1885.

Fulham, there's a picture from 1890.

Thanks Paul, that's marvellous stuff and just the info I was after.

Here’s a few interesting ones:

Millwall Athletic 1894

Ilford 1894

Clapton 1894-5

London Caledonians 1893

It's OK - Just looking for the Hammers - Malcolm Pike at the back second left?

It is Stan Charlton, the skipper for that season.

Thanks for sharing the 1961 one, it is an iconic O's photo of a legendary team.

Davis is right of course, it's Charlton, not Pyke in the back row. I've got one of Pyke on his own in my update, that's what I was thinking of.
