A couple of years ago this badge was bought by the same person so I made contact with the buyer to find out who he was and ask for better photographs for my digital archive. The buyer was working on behalf of a client with connections to the ownership of Zenit St Petersburg. Hence the Piter badge name. His emails were very polite and his client is obviously a fan of English Football but my offer for him to buy Barnsley and change our name to Barnsley St Petersburg was not commented on.

Thanks Pete

Regards Wave

I suppose i should have worded the post "The most expensive Manchester United Badge" in light of the comments now made!

Thanks for everyone's input in the post so far...i may be able to add something else later

Thumbs Up

Here are some other Badges involving MU that i think would be considered to be much sought after:

https://flic.kr/p/6j6Dsn
https://flic.kr/p/6y8HAQ
https://flic.kr/p/6oLj7W
https://flic.kr/p/haiKT9
https://flic.kr/p/fhkuJu
https://flic.kr/p/6j6FUr

with this last one very quirky indeed-i have seen this same badge for both Chesterfield and Wolverhampton Wanderers but never seen another for United

"Considered to be sought after" !!!

Lol, yeah just a little bit Leslie.

Some people would sell their Grandmothers to get their mitts on those, they're absolutely stunning!!

Very Happy

That 1912 cup final badge in Turvey Tyke's post is a bit of a bobby-dazzler too isn't it, cor what a beauty.

That was the year my club was born too.
1912 was a bit of an infamous year for disasters, what with Newport County being formed and all that Titanic malarkey.

I take it that you are referring to the Russian badge site-correct?.

A number of the MU badges are not in their possession either and the latest badge i mentioned as the post itself was removed from the auctioneers website as it is the image they took themselves and they were not pleased as it appeared on the badge website BEFORE the auction.

I do not doubt that an immense number are in the hands of the owner of a famous Russian football Club, but it seems he likes to put images on of quality items-maybe he has the majority of the club badges but appreciates others he has missed out on or looks to purchase.

The Antiques Gazette blog says the under bidder was from Russia.

So maybe that is the explanation-i know that A Russian collector has been buying many badges up-maybe it is the same person.

Anyway it is also apparent the website is there to let everyone see-the email link does not work nor does the translation which is a shame because they are missing out if people are looking to sell them anything, but i suspect they must have had offers of £2 badges all day long so now just do their own thing??-just a theory as i suspect they are scouring ebays themselves looking to quality items like the rest of us as well as the regular quality auctions around the UK and no doubt further afield.

Well i have a few that do not appear and whoever it is he aint getting his hands on them for sure[unless the money is right Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing ]only joking! Wave

Yes, in retrospect, the "Newport badge that went for over a grand on eBay" I mentioned previously appears to be the same 'stock photo' that appeared on eBay at the time, and not his own pic.

I never really noticed until Arrgaxon cleverly pointed it out.

So as impressive as his collection undoubtedly is, it's certainly not quite as it initially appeared to be.

Strange practice though, I'd only want pics on my site of items I actually owned.

Maybe one of those investors that think they are collectors, it is just about the thrill of the chase, once acquired it is just another notch on the belt.

I further think that the Russian bidder who lost out on the United badge reckoned some back water auction site would have no real bidders and they "had it in the bag" so took the image off as once they secured it, it can get thrown in with all the others as they have a decent image of it-all of course is supposition on my part but in this particular case i bet i am not that far away from the truth in that they did not expect to meet such opposition Sherlock

I reckon that's spot on.

Interesting stuff. A Victorian era Yorkshire Rugby Union badge was on sale on ebay pre Christmas and was sold for a decent amount (rugby wise, way over my budget). It was then relisted at more cost a short while later by a selller based in Russia.

I wonder if it is the same guy and he realised it wasn't a soccer badge and was relisting because of that, or whether the Russian sporting badge market is larger than we thought?

Wow some stunners amongst that lot, I've no interest in the foreign stuff but the FA ones are mustard.

Sadly I don't have ten grand down the back of my sofa either.

One of the most expensive badge I saw was Woolwich Arsenal Director badge. it was sold in march 2016 at auction. The price was 3400 pounds plus 20% comission. So, buyer (not me) paid 4080 pounds. Interestingly, that this badge was found by a metal detector in Plumstead.

Hi Dima, welcome to the forum my friend, you have a wonderful collection that is greatly admired by many of us badge collectors.
The best badge collection I have seen.

Your knowledge and stories will be very much appreciated on here.
The story about the Arsenal Director's badge is great, we love to read things like that.

I do think your website would be even more impressive if it only had your badges on display though.

Perhaps you could move all the pictures of badges you don't have to a section of their own, called "Pin Badges Wanted" or something?
So there is no doubt as to what is yours and what is not?

Your badge collection is too good to be watered down with other pictures.

Thumbs Up

I have some reasons why I don't publishing wanted list. The main reason is that such information can increase price of such items. (At least such situation I'm watching on russian market.) I can say only that I have about 100 badges in wanted list. I realise, that some of them I will never obtain.
Plus, every year we discover badges that never seen before. It's great and it makes collecting endless.
Regarding Newport County, number 2 on site is not mine. This badge was bought by czech collector.

Yes I understand your reasons Dima.
Fair enough.

It is always a thrill to discover a new badge, or rather an old badge that we never knew existed.
