Newcastle, Villa and Spurs all dipped under 10,000 in the 80s. |
Please don't think I'm doubting you as I'm not - just curious as to the occasions Spurs and Villa attendances didn't reach 10,000. |
Spurs v Birmingham City, 16th April 1986 - 9,359
I'll dig out the Villa one later |

I'm not sure that there was any boycott for Arsenal v Leeds - it was just a common occurrence for many years that crowds could fluctuate greatly within a season
Some examples from before and after the war, all high/low crowds from the same season
Sunderland
1933/4 75,118 v Derby; 3,911 v Portsmouth
Bolton
1932/3 69,912 v Man City; 5,320 v Portsmouth
Newcastle United
1930/31 68,386 v Chelsea; 9,159 v Bolton
Sheffield Wednesday
1933/34 72,841 v Man City; 5,182 v Wolves
Huddersfield
1931/2 67,037 v Arsenal; 2,963 v Man City
Manchester United
1946/7 66,967 v Wolves; 8,456 v Stoke
Manchester City
1923/4 76,166 v Cardiff; 3,000 v Nottingham Forest
Birmingham City
1935/6 60,250 v Villa; 9,089 v Sheffield Wednesday |

Those fluctuations in pre-war attendances are extraordinary - probably worth some serious social research on someone's part.
Unless the answer is as simple as them playing on a Tuesday afternoon, possibly, whilst almost everyone was at work. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

The Daily Express gives the 1933-34 Sunderland v Portsmouth attendance as 25,000. It was played on Wednesday, kick off 6.15pm. |

There is a programme for the Arsenal v Leeds 9th April 1966 game, mega rare. |
The 9/4/66 programme is currently on Ebay.
After less than 2 days on there, the current highest bid is £596 so the seller can look forward to a Happy Christmas.

This is so rare that to guess the final price would be ludicrous. To my knowledge no Arsenal collectors have this and one Leeds collector has it. Thankfully it is too modern for me, so not one on my wants list. Knowing some of the top collectors of both clubs I would guess at Internet meltdown a few seconds before it ends. In all honesty if it was mine it would not be on EBay but would be at a leading auction house with a VERY high reserve the difference the hammer comes down on EBay at the exact second whilst the hammer comes down at auction houses many seconds after the last bid which gives people chance to continue bidding as they will probably never see any copy on the market. I forecast lots of kicked dogs( I hope not) and a few iPads being thrown when people realise they have not bought the programme. |

I just hope that John Daniels does not have a few copies tucked away. He has been a London based dealer since programme collecting first started. It is possible but unlikely that he went to the printers and obtained a few as they were being destroyed but I think if this had been the case they would have hit the market many years ago. |

Looking at the understated description and the 99p postage it would appear that John doesn't realise how rare this is? _________________ For a daily feed of football nostalgia please click on the link to view my Twitter page on your PC - https://twitter.com/MemorabiliaMal |

I am a collector of Arsenal programmes and I am lucky enough to have a copy of this programme in my collection although I have only had it for about 6 weeks, having won it on ebay early in November. Since then I have spoken to a leading Arsenal programme dealer, who in his opinion thinks that there are less than 10 copies in existence. |

Sold for £828.08.
A nice Christmas present for John,
which he deserves for his contribution
to the programme collecting hobby. |

To add to the confusion the April postponed match did in fact sell on eBay in November. It was part of a bundle together with binder & sold for £270. What stands out is condition as it looks like it went to the postponed match with obvious markings which also feature on John's expensive sale. So not straight from the printers. I would query if there are more out there still being used as place mats. Two turning up in two months cannot be just a coincidence surely? And as another point the actual played match programme from May wasn't even included in that bundle!

It will be interesting to see the price put on it by the buyer when it appears on his backboards. |

The 65/66 season is an extremely difficult season for Arsenal home collectors as in addition to the Leeds postponed games there are also 2 more programmes from postponed matches, Spurs in February and Blackpool in December. These two are also elusive and very difficult to find and to make things worse there is also a hard Birmingham issue to find from the 64/65 season. |

Could anyone possibly provide the links to both those ebay sales?
I failed to save John's one.
Thanks. |

It's strange that Lennie Evans missed out on mentioning those four postponed programmes in the relevant checklists within his 1946-1993 Arsenal collectors handbook. |

Hi JamieH,
I have known Lennie for a long time, since before he released his first Arsenal Programme guide in 1983 and it was due to the issuing of these early guides that the existence of these postponed programmes came to light. Following publication of the programme lists and dates other Arsenal collectors spoke to him and told him that they had copies of programmes for different dates for example the Leeds United game. If you have a chance to have a look at Lennie's 2007 version of his guide 1946 - 2006 he makes reference to these postponed programmes in his introduction and features the Leeds and Spurs programmes amongst the pictures on the front and back cover. |
