British Rail Flyer for the 1st Division League Game between Wolves and Pompey played on the 18th February 1950. Wolves won the game One Nil with just over forty six and a half thousand present at Molineux.

Now the following do not directly have any connection to the Newton Heath Football Club[which later evolved to become Manchester United], but they are items from the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company in Manchester[not even the Newton Heath depot] but are fascinating items from that period as many of the workers would have supported their colleagues working at the Wagon Works in Newton Heath[about a couple of miles from the Manchester City Centre even back then] and show how things were done well over a hundred years ago.

On a similar note I have a few train tickets(day returns from the 80s)and the old mufc supporters club coach tickets to FA Cup semis/finals and charity shield in the 1970s...i'll try to upload this week.

A very cheap day return for the Accrington supporters travelling to Derby for the 3rd Division (North) fixture.

At 1/6 return, I doubt there were any facilities on the bus

Yesterday, Palace ran a 'steam special' to the last game of the season at Southampton

It was the first steam hauled football special for nearly 50 years.

One of the 4 Palace owners also owns a number of steam trains and has been wanting to do this for years, but logistically it is nearly impossible to organise -

The biggest issue is that Network Rail have to be able to fit steam excursions into the schedules, so 12 weeks notice is an absolute minimum as that is when they publish schedules

Sky tv can move games at far less notice. The only exception being the last day of the season which is the one Premier League fixture set in stone that tv cannot move the date or time of

Plus the journey needs to be no more than about 100 miles due to the logistics of putting it on (ie the range of the train and the length of time of the journey, ie keeping it to a sensible ticket price)

Our train went from Clapham Junction (stopping at Selhurst and West Croydon for pick ups) Mark Bright waved us off at Clapham, and former player David Payne, plus 3 of the owners were on board. All 200 passengers were Palace fans - steam only fans weren't able to buy tickets.

It was the first run of a restored engine, so the train spotters were out in force all along the route as well as many Palace fans who came out to wave to the passing train as it went on its way!

The whole journey took 3 and a half hours so not the quickest way of doing it, and the spoilsports at the BTP made it a dry train and rode on the train all the way (we put them out the back in a service carriage!) due to it being a football charter which was ridiculous, as people were looking forward to complimentary fine wines with dinner on the return leg courtesy of another owner who owns the countries largest vintners company. So alcohol free wine and beer was provided instead! The average age of he passengers was about 55 and I think the only trouble they'd have has was if the breakfast pastries had run out!

We stopped halfway at Haslemere for water for half an hour - a fire engine hooked up a hose to fill it up! All the passengers got off for photos!

The weather was lovely, it was a brilliant trip.

Sadly no menus or anything to collect, just tickets and of course our own photos (and in my case home video!)

Strangely I don't remember anything of the game LOL

They hope to be able to do it again, but logistically Southampton and Bournemouth are the two most possible and feasible options.

It was a gorgeous day's weather too and now people are sharing their pics on the main Palace forum a lot of people are a bit gutted they couldn't make it and want to have the chance to do it another time.

Any chance the fixture computer could give us an away game at Bournemouth on the last day of next season?!!!

What a fantastic post, what a shame there was nothing in terms of a menu or flier to have as a souvenir, I think you need to speak to the organisers and make sure next time they produce something-all that planning and detail yet it falls down as none of those who put it all together perhaps have the collectors mentality-shame.

Anyway, it looks like you all enjoyed the day-good memories for sure.

Maybe next week with all the trials and tribulations that MUFC has had to endure this season only to top it off yesterday with the seasons biggest farce they can get some street cred back-but I would not bank on it!-I was praying for a Watford United final, but Palace hmm + Pardew some old wounds-na! not going to happen-is it?

Don't know if I could afford 3 away games in Europe plus the community shield to be honest, but I guess you never know in football. Need to do a bit of a 'Wigan'!

Correct about the lack of literally anything collectible - real shame. Even the tickets were sent by email for print at home!

Am thinking of making myself a 'photo book' which I have done before through Truprint, looks quite good if you choose a nice hardback version. Plenty of professional quality photos and I can mix in with mine too.

Agree re a 'collectors mentality', my thoughts were immediately 'wonder what there will be'!

The club have been universally given great feedback, both from Palace fans who did the excursion, and the "rail enthusiasts" quarter, who seem to have been thrilled that something unusual took place. Palace want to try and do it again, and I think they will do, however the logisitics are very complicated for these things, so it could be later rather than sooner.

Can only the echo the sentiments already produced...a wonderful experience.....as mentioned its a shame a menu or memento wasn't produced which could have been signed by the owners/players! Cracking post....many thanks for sharing!

PS. Pompey couldn't do that Journey to Southampton.....
