The Busby Babes

With the advent tomorrow of the 58th Anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster i have an item that has origins of Matt Busby & Jimmy Murphy's plans into the Youth players and his vision.

In 1953 United started to play friendly matches and they blooded some of the younger boys, one such match was at Kilmarnock but they never produced a programme!, However at the prior home match Kilmarnock made comments on the front cover advising supporters that United were coming next week[yet they showed no commercial acumen whatsoever and would have sold 1000's-but as they probably only sold a few 100 usually they did not even take a risk on a few hundred copies!].

This then is the only programme that advises of the forthcoming match-valuable?, must have? conversely is there anyone who has a Kilmarnock programme for the next home match after the United one where there is any mention at all?

Kilmarnock programmes are hard to find from this period as it is.

Interesting subject for a little debate perhaps.

Brentford FC have a connection with the Duncan Edwards stained glass windows in Dudley, which is nice. Only Brentford and Crystal Palace gave donations to the church, St Francis parish church, who requested help in creating a memorial to the late Duncan Edwards.

Nothing to do with the Busby Babes, but the advertising of a friendly set me thinking.

Back in 1983, my team, Crewe Alex were destitute (nothing changes!!) and arranged a mid season fundraising friendly against Man Utd. To drum up business, a flyer was circulated in advance of the game.

Really can't remember whether they kept their word or not!
