Southern Floodlight Challenge Cup

With the intoduction of Floodlight match during the 1950,s the

Southern Floodlight Challenge Cup started.......brentford, charlton, millwall, watford, reading, luton & arsenal took part over a 4 year period from 1955.56.

I have all the programmes but missing a report for the final v Reading played 30th April 1958



Can anyone help ???

And was there a 'Northern' equivalent........

Just having a couple of nice pints before this afternoon's game against Gillingham and thought I'd look at the forum for a few minutes.

I seem to recall there was a Northern version of this competition and I had a programme once for a final between Wigan and Southport around 1968.

I am sure there will be info out there with a quick google.

West ham won 2-1 in 1955.56 v aldershot

Pompey lost to brentford

Pete, I do not have a match report. However I do have a copy of the Pompey Evening News from 3rd May 1958 which states the following in a season review:

"They gained some consolation for all their disappointments on Wednesday evening when, in the Final of the southern Floodlight Cup , they beat Reading 2-0 at Reading, and so became the third holders of the Trophy."

Elsewhere in the review it mentions that "local boy Michael Watts of Gosport who after appearing in the junior side, made a number of appearances in the Reserves, and on Wednesday helped the Senior side win the Southern Floodlight Cup by scoring one of the two goals."

Did Pompey play Brentford home and away? I have the away at Brentford. If they played them at home as well can you confirm the match date and I will add it to my wants list.

If you have it a list of all Pompey matches in this competition that would be helpful and I will check against what I have and do not have. Thanks.

We had floodlights installed in 1953 and officially used on 2nd May for a match of England v Scotland. I only have the handbill but would love the programme. The teams for England v Scotland were drawn from Aldershot players only - no caps issued so not a real international but for the next 2 years the Aldershot England v Scotland teams played a number of games locally as fund raisers, I have 2 such programmes but there must be more
