On the theme of long disbanded cup competions like the Texaco Anglo-Scottish and Watney does anyone have issues from this? I think it only ran for two years but unsure?

I have this which is a Northern Group 1 League brochure produced by Manchester City and the two City match programmes from the ones I actually bothered to attend!

I think it ran from 1985 to 1992 and was also known under sponsorship as the Simod Cup and Zenith Data Systems Cup.

Palace winning that was absolutely unbelievable. Nowadays, people tend to rewrite history and downgrade it.

To be fair the crowds were terrible until the very latter stages of the competiton

Remember Reading took something like 50,000 fans to Wembley for their final!

Reading valued their 1988 victory so highly that they produced a 25 year celebration booklet to commemorate it in 2013.

Believe it or not, I was actually "locked out" of a Zenith Data Systems match !!

Yes locked out, I think I was 14 years old.

Along with a few thousand other Ipswich Town fans for the Norwich v Ipswich ZDS match in 1990.
The coaches arrived quite late and the Ipswich turnstiles had already been closed at 6:30pm - as the enclosure was full.

It was chaos and all we could do was listen to the match/atmosphere from outside. Occasionally you could catch a glimpse of the ball being hoofed from one end of the pitch to the other.

Norwich rarely played Ipswich in those days so it was a huge match for the East Anglian area.

Was at the Forest v. Everton final in 1989, 4-3 to Forest, bloody brilliant !

Garry Parker's goal in that was one of the best I'd ever seen. Came from an Everton corner which Forest cleared, and fed Parker, who took it from the edge of one penalty box to the edge of the other, before smashing it past Southall.

Clough's Forest team of the late '80's were a great watch.

Rovers only ever played 3 games in this competition.
In 90-91 we played away at Watford and Palace.
In 91-92 We had a home game with Ipswich.

If anybody has a copy of Blackburn v Oxford 1986/87 from this competition I'd very very interested - it's the only programme I'm missing from this competition.

Fingers crossed someone out there has a copy.

Andy
Thumbs Up

August 1982 - Palace were involved in three matches with Brentford, Wimbledon and Millwall for the Football League Trophy which seemed to run for only that one season - at least, that was the only season CPFC took part in it.

This is the 4-page programme for the Palace v Wimbledon match on 17th August, front cover & inside - the back page was all adverts.

Here Tommy Langley takes on Dons' Tony Tagg quite probably with little effect.

Palace's results in this competition were:-

14.8.82
Brentford 2, Palace 2 (Brooks, Edwards) - att: 3,397

17.8.82
Palace 1 (Edwards), Wimbledon 0 - att: 2,852

21.8.82
Palace 0, Millwall 3 - att: 4,844

There ended Palace's interest, if it ever actually started. I certainly didn't see any of those games - cricket got in the way, thankfully.

Does anyone know what happened later in the tournament?

I remember both the Simod & ZDS cup, in particular the ZDS Northern Semi-Final played at Meadow Lane Notts County on a wet and windy night on 08/01/92. Standing on the open terrace in the pouring rain and the game went into extra-time. Leicester won 2-1 the attendance was 11559 with 10000 Leicester fans making the short journey up the A46. It ended in tears in the Northern Final when we lost to Nott'm Forest

DM.
The Rovers prog you have there is an Associate Cup one.
That is the competition for the two bottom leagues that is still going now.
The Full members Cup/Simod/ZDS is for teams in the top two leagues.

The FM was started to give clubs extra games when English clubs were chucked out of European tournaments.

Cheers,Jamie.
