Last night I discovered that there is no longer extra time to be played at the end of 90 minutes in League Cup ties - instead, the game goes straight to a penalty shoot out.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the logic in that, please?

Also, on that subject, Hull City won on pens last night at Accrington and I heard on 5Live Stanley manager John Coleman being interviewed. He said he knew Hull would win the shoot-out as the pens were at the away end and it's always the case that the winning team takes pens in front of their own fans.

My first thought was "sour grapes" - but then I thought about 3 shoot-outs that I remember Palace being in.

2000/1 v Tranmere - League Cup - Palace won on pens at HOME end

2010/11 at Pompey - League Cup - Pompey won on pens at HOME end

However........

2003/4 at Sunderland - Play Off semi-final - Palace (away team) won on pens at home end.

So that's 2-1 in favour of successful pens in front of own fans.

Can anyone else provide any thought on that? Is it sour grapes?

And what about dispensing with extra time?

All 4 goals at Accrington v Hull were scored in extra time.

Blimey, you're right - so there is extra time then. I was listening to 5 Live commentary last night, Bristol Rovers v Birmingham, and the commentator said there would be no extra time and it would go straight to penalties. But I switched off before the end of 90 mins so just assumed he was right.

Thank God for that though, I can't imagine why they would scarp it.

I hadn't heard about ET being stopped. The 90 minutes was pretty dire but extra-time seemed to come alive with the 2-2, goals galore and action!

Penalties were at the City end. Out of interest, us City fans actually outnumbered the home fans in the stadium!

I always view it the opposite way round to the Accy manager.

The team taking the pens in front of their own fans are under more pressure IMO.

I've lost count of the times I've seen it work against a team.

I'm not sure there's any such proof for either argument mind, but I know my teams (Newport & Liverpool) have won more shoot-outs than they've lost when not facing their own supporters.

I also think the manic arm-waving that occurs to try and put the other team off is counter productive.
It seems to add a steely focus to players and make them even more determined to score.
I know it would me.

Sounds like a whole load of straw clutching from Coleman if you ask me.

I for one, was as happy as a frenchman who'd invented self removing trousers, when we scored in injury time.

We might not have made it home from Morecambe till about 2am.

Concerning penalty shoot-outs, I always find its more of an advantage to go first rather than which end you're at.

I think there's a trend for going straight to pens after 90 minutes in friendlies/pre-season tournaments, but not in proper competitions that I'm aware of.

As Sharrow says if you win the toss you'd choose to go first rather than choose the end if you've any sense (do you even get the choice of end or is it generally dicatated?)
I'd prefer to shoot at whatever end my supporters are at though

This years Copa America went straight to penalties after 90 minutes in the quarter-finals and semi-finals but played the extra-time in the Final before the shoot out.

The Football League Trophy goes straight to penalties (or has for the last couple of seasons at least).

As regards facing your own supporters in penalty shoot-outs, I can recall five penalty shoot-outs at Molineux - 2 wins and 3 losses. On each time the away support were located in the side stand not the end.

The Northern Premier League Cup goes to penalties rather than extra-time.

On the subject of which, Grantham are currently on a run of 9 consecutive penalty shoot-out victories Smile

Having, a long time ago, missed a penalty in a Cup Final (very, very minor one!), I know how small the goal looks and how big the goalie looks if you're not up for it!

We had a supporters game a few years ago, I missed 3 in one game. I thought after the second it cant go anywhere else but in............... how wrong I was.

Needless to say I'm not allowed to criticise anyone for missing a penalty now Shocked
