Can anyone advise regarding the etiquette of Flickr with regards to "borrowing" other users images? Like a number of forum members I have been looking at a number of Flickr sites/collections and in some instances I have "clicked" on the favourite button.....only to find that they have suddenly appeared within my favourites on my site!!! An example is a number of Manchester Utd v Portsmouth Photographs from Leslie's fantastic collection.......You can obviously carry out this action but it seems a little wrong to me.....do other users normally request to carry out this action? Do you or can you pass on your thanks to the site owner? Any advice would be helpful and if you do read this Leslie and others I hope its Okay?
My effort......Work still in Progress....

I've also "favourited" a few from Leslie's collection but they don't appear on my own site anywhere (well I don't think they do).
My own rationale is that I only put up original stuff that I own.
That way I don't take the risk of annoying anyone. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Hi Phil
No need, if you or anyone else wants an image that is perhaps "paired with another one" and you do not want both just one then ask I would send you that separate image in a high res-ok.
If you want to add any of my images to your site as one of your favourites then I am pleased for you to do so and no need to be courteous about it as this is what flickr is all about-share and share alike-I have some favourites on my site and I did not ask permission as all the images are there for all flickr members to look and favourite.
If anyone who is not on flickr want an image then provided for me at least it is not for any commercial venture then I will send it no problems, if it is for a book or a magazine then there is a fee for the author's or publishers to pay as I do not obtain any items for free and the amount of request for me to do so is incredible, they would not dare ask Getty for a free picture so why ask me!.
Any genuine collector can have an image no problem.
Steve at Derby is right use the flickr email if you want to write to any members-it's that easy.

Indeed!
I have to pay Getty Images each month at work and they do not come cheap. But their archive IS vast.
They also have hundreds of people scouring the internet as they caught our media team out using an unlicensed image (quite innocently) and, like a dog with a bone, wouldn't let go until the fine was paid.
One Flickr question for you, Leslie - what's the procedure for not permitting an image to be downloaded?
I have a few choice items I'd like to upload but don't want them copied by others willy-nilly.
Can't locate anything in the settings menu. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Very good question indeed Steve!
I think there is something in the detail regarding copyright and if you want to state that, u can of course NOT use any copyright and anyone can do what they want but i have to say i really am not sure how to answer your question, perhaps some much more savvy it member on the forum may be able to assist, i am a point and go man being able to do all the basic work but not super techy!. I am sure there is something that allows you to restrict images being copied-there has to be so sorry that i cannot assist.
Just out of interest uploaded some interesting items from the 1956-7 European Cup campaign from Spain and Germany tonight including a superb Borussia Dortmund Dinner Menu signed by the Busby Babes

No matter, Leslie, thanks for trying.
Keep posting up those dinner menus!
They're a side interest of mine - though I only collect those from cruise liners pre-1939.
Not only interesting to see how culinary tastes have changed down the years (no vegetarians in the 30s! If you were, you'd starve!) but the designs, especially those in the art-deco style, are wonderful.
And still (relatively) cheap to purchase.
Must upload those sometime. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Evening Derby, good question, and one that Rockyboro has asked me earlier tonight. I think I've asked Leslie the same question before but he didn't know either.
I think most of us have reservations over some single sheet issues, especially if the original is just a b/w photocopy, this is what I've done.

Admittingly, none of my teamsheets are worth a great deal but it does stop people from printing them off and selling them at £3.99 each, post free _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sharrowblade/sets

Hi Phil, yes I think if you want to use another's image then you should ask permission out of courtesy. I've asked Leslie and Raymond before and they have been kind enough to allow me to use an image. I've also remarked that this image was courtesy of flickr member......with said referencenumber link etc etc.
The majority of the 1899 home programmes were photographed at Sheffield Libraries and I had to ask in written permission from the council of which they agreed to, as long as I referenced the Library and they weren't for commercial use which I agreed to.
The only other images which weren't my own were volunteered, as
my flickr collection is a collaboration between a friend and myself.
He owns all the good stuff and I own all the tat.
It is a reference guide more than anything else. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sharrowblade/sets

That's quite clever, Sharrow! But I suppose the downside is it does "interfere" with the image.
I put up a 64/5 Heanor Town v Derby s/s on Flickr with the same reservations you have - I doubt more than 2 or 3 exist - but I guess the urge to upload a complete season got the better of me.
Perhaps the answer is how one sets up one's Flickr account at the very beginning?
Thus teamsheet of yours brought back bad memories for me........Manuel, Gianfranco Tome? Candido Costa? Noel Whelan?
What the hell were any of these mercenaries doing at my club?

I add watermarks to my rarer single sheets before uploading to Flickr or my website. I only do the ones that are printed on one side. I'm at work at the moment and can't get onto Flickr but hopefully the link below shows an example:
www.flickr.com/photos/wrexhamprogs/16222942551
I use software called uMark:
https://www.uconomix.com/Products/uMark/Default.aspx
There is a free version that has quite a lot of functionality and it is very easy to use.
Mind you, any expert in photo editing would be able to remove the watermark if they really wanted to. _________________ www.wrexhamprogrammes.com |

I`ve put my entire collection on my Flickr page, if people want to add them as favourites or just copy them that`s fine, i`ve got the original items, that`s all that matters to me, saying that, i recently bought some privately taken photos from the 1901 cup final, at great expense, i have`nt put these on my Flickr page as they may form part of a book that me and a couple of friends are working on |

I have looked high and low all around flickr to see how to prevent anyone downloading and printing images for perhaps commercial gain.
Under "Settings" and "Privacy and Permissions" there are is an option "who can access your original image files". There is an option that allows you to choose "only you".
When you click edit to see what other options are available flickr's statement is as follows:-
This setting lets you choose who can see your original image files.
Enabling this setting also places deterrents to discourage downloading of your other sizes. (And we really do mean "discourage". Please understand that if a photo can be viewed in a web browser, it can be downloaded.)
From reading the above I was left with the opinion that you can't altogether stop people downloading if they really want to.
It discouraged me uploading photos but I like Wrexham's way round it as I have done something similar

I am a graphic designer and web developer. Unfortunately i believe there is no way to do this absolutely even with a watermark.
Watermarks can be edited and image colours cloned.
The only thing in my professional opinion i would suggest halts the problem if people are worried about people re-using images and making a financial gain from personal images are as follows. (This is what i do )
Never publish anything you want to be protected and feel personal about over 72dpi. For web purposes images only need be 72dpi. And size them as low as legibility will let you. Anyone taking these web sized (72dpi -150dpi) pixel images, will never be able to get a good enough quality from them. They will not be able to blow them up in size without pixalation and will defintely not be able to use them in printed materials, as that requires 300dpi.
So in short always save them for web at lower pixel sizes that are suitable for web viewing but not for print recreation.
Hope this helps. |

Re flickr sites,
Yes ask permission first, the answer from me is always OK, like a lot of others.
If you have a flickr site & worried other will 'borrow' a photo/s
just adjust the additional info which can be Public, private, family & friends, resticted, any flickr members, only you.
So there are lots to consider when uploading....... _________________ RESPECT..................

Using the edit button I am putting mine in frames but if anyone wanted a scan of the original without the frame, I would provide it without a problem. |
