Are the viewers of this forum aware of varieties within Official FA Cup Final programmes ?

I know that in recent years there have been hard copy so-called Collectors Editions of some programmes.

In 1965 for the Leeds United vs Liverpool FA Cup Final programme there were two versions of the Official programme : in the centre pages, the team names and border were red, and in the other version the team names and border were green.
Does anybody know why ? and what the numbers produced of each type were ?

In the 1970 FA Cup Final Chelsea vs Leeds United Wembley game there were two versions of the Official programme : on the back page the Bovril advert was considerably different and on page 18 there are two completely different adverts for Wills Castella Cigars
again same question :
Does anybody know why ? and what the numbers produced of each type were ?

when these come up for sale it's a rare seller who make smention of these differences.

There was a very detalied series of articles in Programme Monthly a few years back on this very matter. There is a detailed index available and I'm sure if you contact the editor, John Litster, he'd be able to find the ones concerned should you need a complete reference.

This happened with the 1986 FA Cup Final between Everton + Liverpool too.

If I remember rightly it's just like you said for the 1965 final...

...in the centre pages, the team names and border were red, and in the other version the team names and border were green.

Thanks for your email. This subject has been covered in some depth in several issues of Programme Monthly over the last 28 years. I have received a number of enquiries about this subject in recent weeks, and will therefore begin to re-examine the variations in a series of articles in Programme Monthly, starting with the July issue.

I would be obliged if you would share this information with other
correspondents to the website you referred to

Thanks again,

Regards

I've seen one (home-made, no doubt) alternative FA Cup Final "alternative" - no pics and £5.99!!!!! No thanks. Remember the old stuff and in fact I've collected quite a few Everton Pirate progs over the years (although mostly semi-finals from way back)

They are pretty shoddy - even by the standards of that time!

Being an Everton collector, I certainly know that there definately 'different' issues for the 66, 68, 84 & 85 FA Cup Finals.

Changes to certain pictures within progs, team line ups & officials included are all variations on each edition.

Can anybody summarize the article expected to appear in July's edition of the Programme Monthly regarding the variations of Cup Final programmes starting with the July issue?

I live in the USA and so it is not easy for me to obtain this magazine for myself to read.

Jack, if you right click on each image and then click on 'Save Image As' you should be able to then save the images to wherever you want on your pc.

Very informative article.

Another question I had : was how many print runs of each variety were produced, so that one can gauge the relative scarcity of each variety ?

I assume that that was not answered in this article in July's Programme Monthly ?

Looking through my copy of the First edition Leeds United vs Liverpool 1965 Programme with the red team border, on page 5 there is a full team photo of the Leeds United players in a posed position, NOT the action photo from the FA Cup semifinal as mentioned in the Programme Monthly article. So I don't know if the author has that correct or if there is yet another edition of this programme extant ?

The July edition was the first of a series wherein the editor discusses the variations of Cup Final programmes. I assume that the series is continued in the current (August 2009) edition.
I have no way of in fact knowing whether this is true or not. I live on the West Coast of the USA. If the series has indeed been continued then I would like someone to mail the article to me via my normal e*mail address so that I can save the articles. The July 2009 edition finished with the 1972 FA Cup Final. Leeds United vs Arsenal. I assume that the editor will continue with the 1973 FA Cup Final Sunderland vs Leeds United programme whenever he resumes writing the article.
Please see the earlier posts above to the topic on this forum.
The Editor has informed us that he first discussed FA Cup Final programme varieties in editions of the Programme Monthly dating back to the 1980s.
