24 October 1953
Sheffield Wednesday v Portsmouth
Wonderful image of Hillsborough on the cover. My first visit to Hillsborough was in 1981 and I was amazed by the size of the Kop.
The 1953 match itself ended 4 - 4.

Saturday 24th October 1964 - 56 years ago today
Division II
Newcastle United 2 (Robson, Suddick), Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 28,750
Champions-elect Newcastle saw off then 6th placed Palace in the first-ever league meeting between these 2 clubs. Instead of mentioning a Palace player, why not give Bryan "Pop" Robson a go, aged 18 here and scoring what was his 5th goal in 7 starts thus far in this season. In total he scored 82 league goals for Newcastle and 265 in his long career that lasted till 1986. I chose to be him in the school playground for a year or so alongside my lanky mate who was Wyn Davies, about 1969, and here he is in that year:-

Wednesday 25th October 1967
Representative Match
Crystal Palace U-19's 2 (Kember, Light) v England Youth XI 1 (Curtis)
For some reason Palace hosted a rep match against an England Youth XI for at least two years, and in Club Notes the hope is that the full Palace first team will one day contain 11 home-grown players. Well, 11 years later and the first team contained 10, with only John Burridge being drafted in. So the Club's dream was very nearly fulfilled.
Some fine players in the England side, notably Dave Thomas at #11 and what looks like "Curry" inserted at #8 - presumably Tony Currie. Grotier, Curtis, Burton, James, Gould, Went, Bunkell, Stenson and "Leydlaw" (Laidlaw?) all had long senior careers. For Palace only Payne and Kember really succeeded though a few others reached the first team, albeit briefly. |

25 October 1947
Wrexham v Carlisle in Division 3 North. A 2 - 1 win for the home team
Meanwhile, back at Brunton Park:
Carlisle Reserves hosted Annfield Plain in the North Eastern League.
For those who don’t know, Annfield Plain is a village in County Durham.
Also on 25 October 1947
New Brighton v Mansfield Town
This match ended in a 2 - 2 draw.
Much further South:
Bournemouth v Port Vale
A 3 - 0 win for the home side in front of an attendance of 17025.

Liverpool 2 Derby 2 (Billy Steel 2)
att: 49,724
Bradford PA 0 Derby 2 (Kevin Hector 2 (1 pen))
Part of the deal which brought the legend-to-be to the Baseball Ground. He wouldn't have been too popular on the night.
38 years ago in the Milk Cup.
Hartlepool 4 Derby 2 (Kevin Wilson, Mike Brolly)
Memories! Getting from Aberdeen to Hartlepool for a Monday evening fixture wasn't the easiest, logistically, and the fact it went to extra time didn't help my return journey. I think I ended up spending the night in a waiting room at Newcastle station. Or possibly a bench outside the waiting room. The things you do when you're young. Tie ended 4-4 on aggregate so I guess Derby won on away goals as they drew Birmingham in the next round.
Left my original programme on the train north so had to get this copy from a dealer!

Saturday 26th October 1946
Divisionn III South
Crystal Palace 1 (J Lewis), Port Vale 2 (Bellis, Wootton)
Gate: 14,492
Palace finished in 18th place and Vale in 10th in the first full season of league football after WW2.
Has anybody seen anything like this in a programme before? Can you imagine the furore if the Twitterati had this today? This page appeared in most home programmes in that season.
Then there was this which caught my eye today. In fact there's another similar page in this programme, but the target on that occasion was mining, as opposed to the Bank Of England. Quite extraordinarily political and I wondered if anyone had seen anything like it in their own club's programmes?

26 October 1935
Lancashire Combination
New Brighton v Fleetwood
A standard New Brighton programme of the period with the corner clipped for the half time raffle.
Programme includes a short article about how Fleetwood are keen to progress in football. It would be 77 years (and after a couple of reincarnations) before Fleetwood Town made it to the football league in 2012.

26 October 1966
League Cup 4th round
Carlisle United v Blackburn Rovers
Despite Blackburn having England international Keith Newton in their ranks, it was Carlisle who went through by 4 goals to nil.
In goals for Carlisle was Alan Ross. He holds the all time appearance record for Carlisle with 466 appearances. It’s highly unlikely that anyone will ever get close to that record.
Another team member was Terry Caldwell. Terry joined Carlisle from Leeds in 1961. He went on to play 344 times for Carlisle (scoring just 1 goal) before moving to Barrow in 1970.

Saturday 27th October 1951
Division III South
Bristol City 2 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 18,857
Palace had appointed Arsenal's Laurie Scott as player-manager on 11th October, and this was his third game in charge - and first defeat. He lasted 3 years and in his 3 seasons, Palace finished 19th (51/2), 13th (52/3) and 22nd (53/4). He played in 30 matches before retiring. City finished 15th but were on an upward keel, unlike their visitors.
Scott is seen here on 19th October with two of his better players - on left, prolific striker Cam Burgess, signed from Chester, who scored 40 goals in 50 games before returning north to York, and on right, full back Harry McDonald, who played 146 games. All 3 appeared in this fixture.

27 October 1928
North Eastern League Division 2
Carlisle Reserves v Crawcrook Albion
Crawcrook is a village west of Newcastle/Gateshead not too far from Ryton. It was a mining village. I don’t know anything of the history of Crawcrook Albion. Wikipedia has nothing. There is a Northern League team now called Ryton & Crawcrook Albion that was formed in 1970.
This match was played in Carlisle’s first League season.
27 October 1934
Stockport County v Carlisle United.
A 2 - 0 home win. This was a poor season for Carlisle and they finished bottom of the League with just 23 points. Fortunately, they were re-elected to the League.
27 October 1951
Oldham Athletic v Workington
First season away for Workington and very familiar programme cover from Oldham. One of the more common Workington aways from that season; but can still fetch £20 - £30. Workington won this match 1 - 0

27 October 1962 is generally believed to be the closest the world has come to full blown nuclear war. At the height of the Cuban missile crisis an American pilot was shot down over Cuba. There is loads on the internet to read about the subject for anyone interested.
Meanwhile, football carried on as normal and here are a few programmes from that day.
Shrewsbury Town v Carlisle United
Carlisle United Reserves v Stockton
A single card with team line ups on the front and nothing on the back.
Workington v Hartlepools United
Clyde v Third Lanark
Really like the cover on the Clyde issue. Never smoked myself but guess early 1960s men would have fully identified with the beer, fags and football imagery on the front. |

27 OCTOBER 1965
Sunderland entertain local rivals Newcastle Utd in a benefit game for Brian Clough who was forced to retire through injury.
Brian Clough joined Sunderland from his hometown club Middlesbrough for £45k in July 1961 and scored 64 goals in 61 appearances. He suffered a broken leg in December 1962 playing against Bury. His comeback game was against Leeds in September 1964 but it was clear he was not able to continue and he played just 2 more games before being forced to retire.
Of the players who have scored over 200 goals in the English leagues, Clough has the highest goals-per-game ratio of 0.916 with 267 goals in 297 games' |

Aberdeen v British Army
Some good players drafted into the Army line up. I would be interested to know the final score if anyone knows it.

28th October 1967 - an unusual scoreline and its mirror image for Derby that day.
Bolton 5 Derby 3 (Hector, O'Hare, Durban)
att: 12,631
Derby reserves 5 Barnsley reserves 3
(Boyer, Butlin, Cleevely 3)
67 years ago - the first of 5 Scottish clubs to visit the Baseball Ground that season for floodlit friendlies.
Derby 3 Hibernian 3 (McLaren 2, Neilson)
