The chemistry of the reaction resulting in the formation of rust can be summarized as follows.
The chemical equations for rust formation
1.2Fe(s) + 2H2O(l) + O2(g) ==> 2Fe2+(aq) + 4OH-(aq)
2.Fe2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ==> Fe(OH)2(s)
3.Fe(OH)2(s) =O2=> Fe(OH)3(s)
4.Fe(OH)3(s) =dehydrates=> Fe2O3.nH2O(s) or rust
The chemical formula for rust is Fe2O3.nH2O
therefore, avoid any of the above and you should be ok. |
What happens if you replace H2o with J2o? |

Thanks again to everyone, with a special mention for Wullie's scientific insight.
I've become so interested in rusty staples over the last couple of days that I'm seriously thinking of starting a collection. |

If you do remove them and want to keep the pages together, you could always get a thin needle with a bit of thread and go carefully through the staple holes and 'tack' the pages.
This has been done on a few old programmes I have bought over the years and if done well, it is hardly noticable. |

Rusty Staple.
Wasn't that the title of a quarterly magazine issued by the West Midlands Programme Collectors Club in the early nineties if memory serves me well?

That's correct fella. I managed to get some real bargains from members of that club and like this forum there were plenty of contacts to be made. All before the computer / e-mail age......sadly missed. |

Somebody once explained to me that buying a programme with the original staples missing (rusted or not) was like buying a piece of old furniture where the drawer handles had been replaced.
He has a point, but I still take the bloody things out at the first sign of rust, or if they've already rusted, especially if they've started to leave rust 'granules' deposited everywhere in the programme.
I nearly freaked out last year when I was looking at some programmes I'd bought at games attended in the early 1990s and found what appeared to be the early signs of discolouration on the edges where the staples bend from the spine to the centre. I ended up checking everything post 80 after that, but only found the odd few glossy issues which had the same fault. To be fair, some of these are 20 years old now!
Anyone else had the same problem with programmes from the more modern era? I'm trying to convince myself that stuff does deteriorate over time as I can’t do much more in terms of storing them!

who told you that??? Dangerknob??? what a load of rubbish.
If any one would like to sell me a pre war fa cup final programme and knock off £100 because the staples are missing, i'll take their hands off.
Any way, acid free bags are very cheap. I put ALL my programmes in these bags and never have any trouble. |

Got over it now - I only checked them as I was logging them so it wasn't a load more effort.
How much do you pay for the acid free bags? (I'm assuming you don't mean the sandwich bags) |

I agree with that to an extent, I think the original staple is an intrinsic part of the programme although it wont stop me buying it if its a rare item.
As long as you keep your programmes in a dry atmosphere, the staples wont rust, and rusty staples wont get any worse. _________________ https://www.flickr.com/photos/footballprogrammes/albums |
