Saturday 1st November 1952
Division III South
Swindon Town 3 Crystal Palace 6 (six) (Burgess 3, Rainford 3)
Gate: 9,106
An incredible result for Palace down largely to Albert "Cam" Burgess, mentioned in October, who scored a hat-trick along with Johnny Rainford, but in Burgess's case this was his third triple in 4 games and one of four in the season, in which he scored 19 goals in 25 games before an injury curtailed his action in March and then he joined York City in July. I wasn't around but I would imagine the Palace 1950's Twitterati were crestfallen.
Born 1919 in Birkenhead so lost a large chunk of his career to WW2, he played a few games each season during the war for Bolton Wanderers and then appeared 5 times in 1946/7 and 1947/8, scoring twice v Pompey and once v Villa. Some bloke called Lofthouse presumably kept him out of the team, so he signed for Chester in Oct 1948, playing 111 games there and netting 64 goals before the move to the bright lights of Selhurst in Sept 1951. 40 goals in 50 games at Palace, and at York in 53/4 he hit 14 goals in 33 games before calling it a day, probably due to an injury but he was then 34 or 5. I have a feeling he would have been much better known had WW2 not cut 6 years off the start of his league career, but there, he wasn't alone. |

1 November 1952
North Eastern League
Carlisle United Res v Spennymoor United
The above was played when Carlisle’s first team were away at Bradford Park Avenue. That programme isn’t where it is supposed to be so will look again for it in the morning.
In the meantime, here are two other programmes from 1 November 1952:
Accrington Stanley v Chester
While Stanley entertained Chester, their near neighbours, Blackburn Rovers, had made the long trip to Plymouth

Newcastle 1 Derby 0
att: 44,571
45 years ago (blimey, is it all that?)
The infamous Battle of The Baseball Ground
Franny Lee v Norman Hunter - Franny wins by a knockout.
As an aside, the actual football finished Derby 3 Leeds 2, Charlie George, Archie Gemmill and Roger Davies on target for the reigning champions in front of 33,107.
A good day all round

Saturday 2nd November 1957
Division III South
Port Vale 4 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 13,602
Miserable away form led to Palace missing the cut in this pivotal season, and despite this heavy win, Port Vale finished a point and a place below Palace to also start a new life in Division IV, which Vale won at the first attempt. Rather than while away another 5 minutes with a Palace player, I'm concentrating on the legendary Vale defender and no 6 here, Roy Sproson.
Born in Stoke in 1930, "Mr Loyalty" signed for Vale in July 49 and made his debut a year later, starting at half back but settling down at full back. He made an amazing 757 starts plus 5 sub appearances playing his last game in 1971 aged 41 and reached an FA Cup semi-final in 1954 where a penalty by his old Vale team-mate, Ronnie Allen, then of WBA, knocked them out. A fine defender and uncle of another Valiant stalwart, Phil Sproson, who played 426 games for Vale between 1977 and 1990. Quite a Valiant family. |

Saturday 3rd November 1956
Division III South
Watford 1 Crystal Palace 4 (Murray 2, Belcher, Pierce)
Gate: 8,785
A surprisingly comfortable win for Palace, only the fourth of the season to date, and a season in which the Glaziers finished in the giddy heights of 20th with their hosts in 11th.
In goal for Palace was Swansea born Vic Rouse, playing his third match for the Londoners, so right at the start of the 7 years of sterling service and 257 games he gave to the club. Also made a little bit of history when in 1959 he was selected for Wales in a home international v Northern Ireland in Belfast, and thus became the first Division IV player to win a full cap. Wales lost 4-1 so Vic wasn't picked again. Had the pleasure of meeting him in about 2000, a right comic and great fella. Still with us, I believe, at 84.

3 November 1951
Mansfield v Scunthorpe
Division 3 North
On the same day:
Exeter City v Reading
Finally, from just 2 years ago:
3 November 2018
Port Vale v Notts County
A great cover from Vale. Part of a series of covers based on artwork by Syd Kirkham. I wonder if the men carrying their boots; some with cigarettes in their mouth, are meant to represent Vale players?
There must be about a dozen similar covers and they make a nice little collection and show what can be done using a bit of imagination to celebrate local life and a love of football. |

3/11/56 Division One
Portsmouth 2 Tottenham 3
Spurs take the points in a season that would see them finish as runners up in the Title race while Pompey survived the drop by just four points.

Saturday 4th November 1961
FA Cup 1st round
Crystal Palace 3 (Byrne, Heckman 2) Portsmouth 0
Gate: 30,464
Amazing gate for a 1st round tie, perhaps 10,000 up from the south coast. Great win for Palace who went on to reach the 3rd round, while Pompey had their minds on a bigger prize and ended the season as Div III champions, with the Glaziers finishing in 15th place.
Action from the game - Pompey forward Ron Saunders causes panic in the home defence but centre half Gwyn Evans manages to clear the danger despite colliding with Vic Rouse.

4 November 1950
Halifax Town v Rotherham United
A 2 - 1 win for the Millers
4 November 1970
Nantes v Cardiff City
Cardiff must have been confident going into this second leg tie in the Cup Winners Cup. They had won the first leg at Ninian Park 5 - 1.
They won the second leg in France by 2 goals to 1 to set up a Quarter Final tie with Real Madrid.
4 November 1961
Workington v Worksop Town
Workington won this 1st round FA Cup tie 2 - 0

Their run in the competition would end at the Quarter Final stage with defeat to Cologne.
4/11/92 UEFA Cup 2nd Round 2nd Leg

Wednesday 5th November 1952
Floodlit Friendly
Gloucester City 2 (Pullen, Haines), Crystal Palace 2 (Burgess, Chilvers)
Fantastic cover for this, one of the earliest floodlit friendlies at a non-league ground, surely. City played at Longlevens, a lovely name for a ground. The programme reports that Spurs had played another friendly there a week or so before, breaking the attendance record when 9,750 turned up - I bet that programme is keenly sought!
One of the goalscorers for Palace was wing-half or full back Geoff Chilvers, Epsom born, signed from Sutton Utd in 1948 and joined Gravesend when he left Palace in 1954 after playing in 123 games and scoring only once. Plus one here!

5 November 1921
Carlisle United v Cleator Moor Celtic
This was a 3rd qualifying round English Cup tie. Cleator Moor is about 40 miles from Carlisle so a bit of a local derby. Carlisle won 2 - 0.
On the same day, about 300 miles south:
5 November 1921
Cardiff City v Manchester City
This was Cardiff’s first season in the first division. They lost this home match 2 - 0. A nice programme; quite scarce to get one with covers as most that turn up from that era are ex-bound volume with covers removed.

5/11/55 Division One
Tottenham 1 Cardiff 1
A terrible start for both clubs continued with this draw.
Spurs had only won twice in their first fifteen matches and would only survive the drop by two points.
Cardiff had won four of their first fifteen and finished the season a couple of points ahead of their hosts.
I'm not sure that the PC brigade of today would allow Ted Ditchburn to be referred to as a potential "stetcher case" as he is in the report from the previous match.
5/11/60 Division One
Tottenham 3 Fulham 2
Danny Blanchflower, Terry Dyson and Terry Medwin all on the scoresheet as Spurs continued their amazing start to the season with their fourteenth victory from fifteen unbeaten games on their way to winning The Double.

This ended in a 3 - 2 home win. Bill Shankly was Carlisle manager that season.
Carlisle United Res v Horden Colliery Welfare
North Eastern League
On the same day in the 3rd division north the following matches were played:
Hartlepools v Accrington Stanley
Halifax Town v Rotherham United
Darlington v Mansfield Town
